Meta to Eliminate Fact-Checkers as Part of Free Speech Push, Says Zuckerberg

Meta CEO signals shift away from censorship as Trump prepares for office.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a seismic shift in the company’s approach to speech and content moderation, signaling the end of politically biased fact-checking and the beginning of a freer online environment. In a video posted Tuesday, Zuckerberg declared that Meta will eliminate its reliance on so-called “independent fact-checkers” and focus on protecting free expression.

Zuckerberg admitted that Meta’s past policies had gone too far in suppressing speech, particularly on controversial topics like immigration and gender ideology. Instead of filtering political content out of people’s feeds, he said the company will allow more political discussion and roll back content restrictions.

“We’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies, and restoring free expression,” Zuckerberg said.

Among the most notable changes coming to Meta’s platforms:

  • Eliminating fact-checkers and replacing them with a system similar to X’s “Community Notes.”

  • Scaling back content moderation to focus only on illegal content and serious violations.

  • Relocating Trust & Safety teams from California to Texas to create a more balanced oversight system.

Zuckerberg also exposed the Biden administration’s role in pressuring Meta to censor political content. He pointed out that the White House had pushed social media companies to suppress certain viewpoints, emboldening foreign governments to demand even stricter censorship.

“By going after us and other American companies, it has emboldened other governments to go even further,” he explained.

This admission confirms what conservatives have long suspected: the federal government, under Biden, was directly interfering with free speech online.

Zuckerberg’s announcement comes just weeks after he met with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Trump campaign advisor Alex Bruesewitz revealed that discussions have already begun about reinstating wrongly banned MAGA supporters.

“We covered these topics as well as the need to reinstate MAGA supporters who were previously wrongly removed from their platforms under questionable circumstances,” Bruesewitz said.

With Trump’s return to power, Meta is now positioning itself to work alongside the administration to push back against global censorship efforts. Zuckerberg made it clear: Meta is done with the left’s speech suppression tactics.

The question now is whether other tech giants will follow suit or double down on their failing censorship strategies.
