Zelensky Shifts Tone After Clashing With Trump

Ukrainian leader reverses course following tense White House meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is quickly changing his tune after his disastrous meeting with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance last week. Following sharp criticism from Trump, Zelensky is now signaling a willingness to negotiate an end to the war something he had previously resisted.

On Tuesday, Zelensky took to X to declare, “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.” This marks a dramatic shift from his previous statement to the Associated Press, where he insisted that the war with Russia was “very, very far away” from ending. That remark prompted a blunt response from Trump:

  • “This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!” Trump declared on social media.

  • Trump pointed out that Zelensky had no real interest in peace as long as the U.S. kept funding Ukraine’s war effort.

  • European leaders, in their meeting with Zelensky, admitted they couldn’t sustain their support without American backing.

Zelensky’s latest statement suggests he is now eager to cooperate under Trump’s leadership. He proposed a ceasefire framework, including prisoner exchanges and an immediate halt to missile and drone attacks if Russia agrees.

In another clear reversal, Zelensky expressed gratitude for U.S. support and acknowledged Trump’s role in arming Ukraine with Javelins during his first term. He also hinted at regret over how the White House meeting played out, though he stopped short of issuing a public apology something Trump allies say the former president expects.

The Ukrainian leader also signaled his readiness to sign a minerals and security deal with the U.S. “at any time,” calling it a step toward “greater security and solid security guarantees.”

After months of pushing for endless American aid, Zelensky is now being forced to rethink his approach. Under Trump’s leadership, the blank check policy is over, and Ukraine is realizing it must prioritize peace over prolonging the war.
