Zach Bryan Defends Anti-ICE Song Amid Backlash from Conservatives

Country star tries to walk back lyrics after disrespecting law enforcement and angering fans.

Country music fans who once celebrated Zach Bryan for his patriotic image are now questioning everything after the singer released a new track laced with anti-ICE sentiment and disrespect toward law enforcement. The 29-year-old artist is now in damage-control mode after the song “Bad News” sparked swift backlash across social media and beyond.

In the controversial lyrics, Bryan sings “And ICE is gonna come bust down your door / try to build a house no one builds no more... / the middle fingers rising, and it won’t stop showing / Got some bad news / The fading of the red, white, and blue.”

It’s no surprise that conservatives, veterans, and everyday patriots were appalled not just by the words, but by the timing. As violence against ICE and Border Patrol agents continues to rise amid America’s border crisis, a popular figure bashing federal agents for enforcing the law feels more like a slap in the face than a protest song.

Rather than issue an apology, Bryan attempted to reframe the controversy on Instagram, writing, “This song is about how much I love this country… When you hear the rest of the song, you will understand the full context that hits on both sides of the aisle.”

The problem? There's no “both sides” when it comes to respecting law enforcement and upholding the law. ICE agents are on the front lines every day, battling human trafficking, drug cartels, and illegal immigration crises that the Biden administration has only made worse. This isn’t about “misunderstood lyrics” it’s about mainstream artists feeding into a culture that demonizes those trying to keep our nation safe.

Even Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem weighed in, calling the lyrics “disrespectful” and “disheartening” in an interview with Benny Johnson.

“He just compromised it all by putting out a product such as that, that attacks individuals who are just trying to make our streets safe,” she said.

And she’s right. We’re at a time when border agents are overwhelmed, fentanyl is flooding across the southern border, and law enforcement morale is at an all-time low. The last thing America needs is another celebrity using their platform to spit in the face of those doing the hardest jobs.

Let’s also remember:

  • ICE arrests led to over 170,000 criminal convictions and charges in 2023, including thousands involving violent crimes

  • More than 70,000 overdose deaths in the U.S. last year were linked to drugs trafficked across the southern border

  • Border states like Texas have declared an invasion, citing massive surges in illegal crossings under Biden’s leadership

Bryan may think he’s being “honest” or “balanced,” but many fans aren't buying it. Patriotism isn’t just a flag on a guitar it’s backing the people who protect that flag every day. The reality is, Bryan’s attempt to play the centrist card after promoting anti-ICE rhetoric is falling flat.

At the end of the day, country fans are sending a clear message: if you side with the radicals who tear down America’s defenders, don’t expect a standing ovation in return.
