Woke Bishop’s Anti-Trump Sermon Shows Marxism’s Grip on the Church

How decades of infiltration hollowed out religious institutions and turned them into political tools.

Tuesday’s inaugural prayer service at Washington’s National Cathedral was supposed to be a nonpartisan moment of solemnity and reflection. Instead, Bishop Mariann Budde turned it into a spectacle of woke politics, using the pulpit to lambaste President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and their families over immigration, transgender issues, and more.

Her tirade, including an appeal for Trump to “have mercy” on “gay, lesbian, and transgender children,” along with a characterization of illegal aliens as “the people who pick our crops,” was an overtly political statement disguised as religious teaching. For anyone unfamiliar with Budde’s history, the stunt may have come as a shock. But for those who have followed her career, it was entirely predictable.

Budde, the first woman to lead the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, has long prioritized left-wing activism over biblical doctrine. Her biography on the diocese’s website touts her work on “racial equity, gun violence prevention, immigration reform, and the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons.” In 2020, she supported racially divisive policies like Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s proposal to provide healthcare exclusively to black residents and called Black Lives Matter protests a “sacred act.”

Her remarks this week reveal how deeply political ideologies have infiltrated American churches. But this phenomenon didn’t arise in a vacuum it’s the culmination of a decades-long Marxist plot to undermine Christianity from within.

Declassified documents from the Soviet Comintern Archives and testimony from ex-communist Herbert Romerstein detail how the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA) targeted mainline Protestant denominations, including the Episcopal Church, for ideological subversion. Their goal was clear: replace the gospel’s focus on salvation with Marxist concepts of class struggle and “social justice.”

Romerstein revealed how clergy became “suckers” for Marxist ideology, manipulated by Soviet agents who rebranded socialism as a moral imperative. The National Council of Churches, an umbrella group that included the Episcopalians, became a key target. By couching Marxist principles in religious language, they successfully reshaped priorities within these denominations, steering focus away from eternal salvation and toward political activism.

The impact of this infiltration was gradual but profound. While the Episcopal Church once affirmed biblical teachings such as a 1998 resolution declaring homosexuality “incompatible with Scripture” it has since embraced positions antithetical to traditional Christianity.

  • 2003: The Episcopal Church consecrated its first openly gay bishop.

  • 2012: Transgender ordination was approved.

  • 2023: Its leaders, like Budde, openly use their platforms to promote woke ideologies.

This transformation didn’t occur organically. It was the fruit of a calculated effort to co-opt religious institutions as vehicles for leftist political agendas.

Budde’s anti-Trump sermon at the National Cathedral exemplifies the culmination of this long-term strategy. By using the name of Jesus to endorse transgenderism and open borders, she aligns with an ideology that seeks to undermine both the church and the nation.

Faithful Christians should heed this warning: Marxist wolves have long been prowling America’s churches, cloaking their agenda in the language of compassion and justice. They have hollowed out institutions like the Episcopal Church, replacing timeless biblical truths with fleeting political trends.

Jesus warned us about such dangers: “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves” (Matthew 7:15). It’s a call to vigilance. Guard your churches, your families, and your faith communities against those who would twist the gospel to serve a worldly agenda.

The woke ideology preached by Budde is not just a threat to the church it’s a warning to all who value truth and tradition.
