Whoopi Goldberg Advises Cuban Americans on Cultural Identity

The View host criticizes Cuban Americans for their political choices, questioning their support for Trump.

On Monday’s broadcast of “The View,” host Whoopi Goldberg took time to tell Cuban Americans how they could be better Cuban Americans, sparking controversy with her remarks.

Goldberg, who has no Cuban heritage, criticized immigrants from the communist-controlled island, suggesting they lacked intelligence if they supported former President Donald Trump. Her comments followed a discussion on the continued Republican support for Trump despite his conviction in the Manhattan hush-money trial.

  • Dictatorship Allegations
Goldberg claimed that supporting Trump was akin to desiring a dictatorship, insinuating that his supporters did not understand the U.S. Constitution. “Anyone who could support Trump must actually want to be ruled by a dictator,” she said.

  • Navarro's Critique
Co-host Ana Navarro, whose family fled Nicaragua, criticized Republican senators backing Trump, calling them “emotional support senators.” She specifically targeted Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

  • Cuban Americans Under Fire
Goldberg questioned how Cuban Americans, who fled an oppressive regime, could support Trump. “All my life I have heard the Cuban people say, ‘We never want to see that, we’re going to make sure it never happens here.’ How can they not recognize when the man says, I’m going to be this guy? What are we missing?” Goldberg asked.

Goldberg’s comments imply that Cuban Americans lack the insight to recognize a potential dictator, despite their history of fleeing one. This perspective ignores the diverse and nuanced political views within the Cuban American community. Many support Trump for his strong stance against communism and his policies that they believe benefit their communities and the broader American economy.

This episode of "The View" highlights a broader issue of elitism and condescension toward immigrant communities who do not conform to a specific political ideology. Cuban Americans, like all Americans, are entitled to their political beliefs without being disparaged by media figures.
