Blue State Governor Wes Moore Rules Out 2028 Presidential Run

Maryland Democrat says he’s staying put despite party buzz, defends crime record after Trump feud.

Despite growing speculation and whispers of a potential 2028 White House run, Maryland Governor Wes Moore made it official he’s not running for president.

In an interview Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, Moore flatly told anchor Kristen Welker that he plans to seek reelection in Maryland and serve out his full second term, shutting the door at least for now on a national campaign.

“Yes, I will be serving a full term,” Moore said. “I’m excited about reelection, I’m excited about what I’m going to be able to do for the people of Maryland.”

When pressed multiple times on whether he was ruling out a 2028 presidential bid, Moore didn’t flinch. “I’m not running for president,” he confirmed. “I completely rule it out.”

Moore’s announcement comes amid mounting frustration with the Democratic Party’s lack of viable post-Biden leadership a problem Democrats are trying to keep quiet heading into a volatile 2024 election year. The 45-year-old first-term governor had been floated by liberal pundits as a fresh face with potential star power in a party desperate for it.

But Moore has had his hands full closer to home, particularly with the rising crime rates that have plagued Baltimore and other Democrat-run cities across the country. Just last month, Moore got into a public spat with President Donald Trump, who slammed blue-state leaders for allowing lawlessness to take over their cities.

Moore pushed back by boasting about Maryland’s recent crime stats and even dared Trump to “walk the streets” of Baltimore to prove his claims wrong. But many Americans who’ve watched Democrat-led cities collapse into violence, homelessness, and open-air drug markets aren't buying the spin.

While Moore claims that Maryland has seen a significant drop in violent crime, the numbers still tell a troubling story:

  • Baltimore remains one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S., with a murder rate consistently in the top five nationally.

  • Over 300 homicides were reported in Baltimore last year, many involving gang violence and illegal firearms.

  • Maryland ranks in the top ten for overall violent crime, according to recent FBI data.

Yet Democrats continue to pat themselves on the back for “progress,” while everyday Americans are left to deal with unsafe streets, broken schools, and collapsing infrastructure.

Moore touted Maryland’s economic record, claiming the state jumped from 43rd in the nation in unemployment to one of the lowest rates but failed to acknowledge that Maryland still faces high taxes, deep blue bureaucracy, and declining quality of life in urban areas.

With Moore stepping aside from national ambitions, the 2028 Democratic bench looks even weaker. Biden, already a lame duck president at age 81, has no clear successor. Vice President Kamala Harris continues to flounder in approval ratings, and other names like Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer carry baggage of their own.

For now, the Democratic Party is stuck and Moore’s decision to remain a local leader highlights that even rising stars know it’s better to stay away from the national disaster unfolding in Washington.

One thing is clear: while Democrats scramble to figure out what comes next, Trump and the Republican Party are gaining momentum, offering bold leadership, real solutions, and a return to law and order.
