Body-Cam Footage Shows Afghan Interpreter Turn Deadly in Virginia Traffic Stop
Chaos erupts as former military interpreter fires on officers during a stop over expired tags, nearly killing two.

A seemingly routine traffic stop in Fairfax County, Virginia, turned into a violent ambush when a man who claimed to be a former military interpreter in Afghanistan opened fire on police officers, nearly killing two. The Fairfax County Police Department released body-cam footage Friday of the April 23 incident, exposing the chaotic and deadly escalation firsthand.
The suspect, 36-year-old Jamal Wali, was pulled over for speeding and having an expired inspection sticker in the Fair Oaks area. What followed was a breakdown in civility and a confrontation that turned deadly in a matter of minutes.
As the officer approached Wali’s car, he was informed by the suspect that there was a firearm in the vehicle. From there, Wali became agitated and erratic, delivering a profanity-laced tirade about his life in the United States.
“You fing people brought me to this goddamn country, and I’m dying every fing single day,” Wali shouted, adding moments later, “I should have served with f***ing Taliban.”
The officer attempted to deescalate and called for backup. When two additional officers arrived, Wali suddenly drew his firearm and opened fire, hitting both officers on the driver’s side of the vehicle. A third officer, stationed on the passenger side, returned fire immediately, striking Wali and likely preventing a full-blown massacre.
Wali, who was married and a father of four, was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
The two injured officers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police confirmed the shooting was an “attempted murder” of law enforcement personnel.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis addressed the press, acknowledging the traumatic outcome for all involved.
“We are very fortunate that we didn’t have two police funerals,” Davis said. “The strategic thinking and quick action by the officer on the passenger side saved lives.”
Chief Davis also acknowledged the tragic collateral damage four children left without a father. “The impact on those children is unimaginable,” he added.
This disturbing encounter underscores a growing pattern of law enforcement officers facing dangerous and unpredictable situations even during standard traffic stops. It also raises difficult questions about the vetting and support systems for individuals brought to the U.S. under wartime programs like those for Afghan interpreters.
And while no one disputes that many of those interpreters served bravely, this horrific incident is a chilling reminder of what happens when broken immigration policy collides with a country increasingly strained by mental health issues, entitlement, and resentment.
In an age when some cities are defunding the police and handcuffing officers from defending themselves, Fairfax County just got a sobering glimpse of what that future looks like and how close two brave officers came to paying the ultimate price.
