Harris Faces 'Greatest Threat' in Debate from 'Quick-Witted' Vance, Says Former VP Aide
Ex-Harris aide highlights Sen. J.D. Vance's debating prowess as a potential challenge for the VP.
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) would be a formidable adversary in a debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, according to Ashley Etienne, Harris’ former communications director. During a recent CNN panel, Etienne remarked on Vance’s debating skills and suggested that he might be the biggest threat to Harris should they face off.
“J.D. Vance would pose the greatest threat to Kamala Harris in some respects. I mean, he’s an incredible debater,” Etienne said. “I think he has this quality that makes him seem palpable to that 1 to 2% that actually might vote or that, you know, that’s undecided that will actually pay attention to the debates because most people don’t pay attention to the debates.”
Etienne emphasized Vance’s sharp intellect and quick wit, qualities that could make him a challenging opponent for Harris. “I think he’s just got a quality about him where he’s just super smart and sharp and quick-witted. I just think ... it’s going to be a challenge to see the two of them face-to-face. I mean, maybe it’s just me, but I think he’s going to be the greatest threat to her,” she added.
The discussion arose from CNN host Laura Coates' inquiry regarding a New York Times report that Trump is considering debate performance as a critical factor in selecting his running mate. Etienne interpreted this focus on debate skills as a sign of Harris being perceived as a significant threat by the Trump camp. “It says to me that to some degree that they think that she’s somewhat of a threat,” she noted. “I mean, she’s a former prosecutor. She spent time in courts defending her clients and defending the interests of California. So, to me, it says, you know, that he might be slightly nervous.”
Vance is among several Republicans reportedly being vetted by Trump’s campaign as potential vice presidential picks. The list includes notable figures such as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), House Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), and former Cabinet member Ben Carson. The Associated Press has described the selection process as “fluid and evolving.”
As the 2024 presidential race heats up, the choice of a running mate who can hold their own in debates could be pivotal. Vance’s reputation as a skilled debater certainly positions him as a compelling option for Trump, potentially setting the stage for some high-stakes face-offs with Harris.
