U.S. Deports Chinese Illegal Immigrants in Major Charter Flight
First Large-Scale Deportation to China Since Trump Administration.
In a significant move, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the deportation of Chinese illegal immigrants this past weekend, marking the first large deportation charter flight to China since 2018. This action underscores Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas’ ongoing efforts to address illegal immigration and collaborate with China on mutual concerns.
Mayorkas, who faced impeachment by the Republican-controlled House earlier this year over his handling of the border crisis, emphasized the importance of enforcing immigration laws. “We will continue to enforce our immigration laws and remove individuals without a legal basis to remain in the United States,” he stated. “People should not believe the lies of smugglers.”
The DHS did not disclose the number of deportees on the flight, but this operation highlights a renewed focus on deterring irregular migration and disrupting human smuggling networks.
Despite the recent deportations, the scale remains small compared to the surge in Chinese nationals attempting to cross the U.S. southern border. In the first 11 months of 2023, 31,000 Chinese nationals were apprehended, a figure surpassing the previous decade’s total.
The Biden administration’s recent executive order, which suspends the entry of some migrants if daily encounters exceed 2,500, aims to manage the border crisis more effectively.
The deportation flight represents a step towards stronger border enforcement, but critics argue it may be too little, too late. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called the executive action “window dressing,” suggesting that more decisive measures should have been implemented earlier in Biden's term.
Concerns over border security are not limited to Chinese nationals. Last month, eight individuals with suspected ISIS ties were apprehended after illegally entering the U.S., raising alarms about national security. According to The New York Post, a wiretap revealed one suspect discussing bomb-making, further heightening fears.
Additionally, the administration faces backlash over violent crimes allegedly committed by illegal immigrants. Former President Donald Trump highlighted these issues during a recent debate, referencing the tragic case of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, who was allegedly raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant. Trump’s comments reflect widespread frustration with the current administration’s border policies.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, border security remains a contentious and critical issue. The Biden administration’s latest actions indicate a shift towards stricter enforcement, but whether these measures will be sufficient to address the ongoing crisis is yet to be seen.
