Ukraine Sends Drone Experts To Help Defend US Bases In Jordan

Zelenskyy says Kyiv quickly deployed interceptor drones and specialists after Washington requested help countering Iranian drone attacks.

As Iranian drone attacks intensify across the Middle East, Ukraine has stepped in to assist American forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Kyiv has dispatched a team of drone specialists and interceptor drones to help defend U.S. military bases in Jordan. According to Zelenskyy, the move came after a direct request from Washington as the conflict involving Iran continues to expand.

“We reacted immediately,” Zelenskyy said in an interview discussing the deployment. “I said, yes, of course, we will send our experts.”

The request reportedly came on Thursday, and Ukraine moved quickly, sending the team the following day.

The White House has not yet publicly confirmed the deployment. Still, the move reflects the growing role of drone warfare in modern conflicts and the growing threat posed by Iran’s expanding arsenal of unmanned aircraft.

Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and thousands of drones across the region in retaliation for recent U.S. and Israeli strikes targeting Iranian leadership and military infrastructure.

Several Gulf nations have already been targeted.

Iranian drones have struck locations in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, while a recent attack in Kuwait reportedly hit a tactical operations center and killed six U.S. service members.

The scale of the drone attacks highlights a major strategic challenge facing modern militaries: low-cost weapons overwhelming expensive defense systems.

Iran has increasingly relied on its Shahed drone series, a type of loitering munition that can travel long distances and explode on impact with a target.

The cost difference between these drones and the systems used to shoot them down is staggering:

  • A Shahed drone costs roughly $20,000 to $50,000 to manufacture.

  • A single Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor missile costs about $3.8 million.

  • Some Iranian drone barrages involve dozens or even hundreds of drones launched at once.

That massive cost imbalance has become one of Iran’s most effective strategic tools.

Defense analysts say the strategy allows Iran to pressure opponents economically even if most drones are intercepted.

“Iran knows it can’t match the United States plane for plane or missile for missile,” one missile defense expert explained. “Drones allow them to punch above their weight.”

Instead of relying solely on expensive missile interceptors, many countries are now experimenting with alternative counter-drone systems. These include electronic warfare tools, directed-energy weapons, and interceptor drones the type Ukraine reportedly deployed to assist U.S. forces in Jordan.

Ukraine has gained extensive experience combating Iranian-designed drones over the past several years during its war with Russia. Russian forces have frequently used Shahed drones to target Ukrainian infrastructure and cities.

As a result, Ukrainian engineers and military units have developed a variety of tactics and technologies to counter the threat.

That battlefield experience is likely a key reason Washington sought Kyiv’s assistance.

Experts say using lower-cost interceptor drones could help reduce the financial burden of defending against large drone swarms.

But analysts also argue that long-term solutions must focus on destroying the infrastructure behind the attacks.

“We can’t just play whack-a-mole in the sky,” one defense researcher said, noting that simply shooting down drones individually remains the most expensive method of defense.

Instead, military planners increasingly emphasize targeting launch sites, production facilities, and storage depots responsible for drone deployments.

For now, however, protecting U.S. personnel and bases remains the immediate priority as Iranian attacks continue across the region.

Ukraine’s deployment to Jordan underscores how drone warfare is reshaping modern military alliances and how rapidly nations are adapting to meet the evolving threat.
