Trump and Zelenskyy Forge Closer Ties Amid Ongoing War

Stronger communication and alignment mark a new chapter between Trump and Ukraine as both leaders push back against Russian aggression.

In a revealing interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear his relationship with President Donald Trump has not only improved it’s growing into a decisive alliance in the face of Russian aggression.

Asked directly whether ties with Trump had strengthened, Zelenskyy didn’t hesitate.
“I think we have better relations than before,” he said. “It’s good that we have often [had] phone calls and meetings.”

The significance of this relationship shift cannot be overstated. The growing rapport between Trump and Zelenskyy suggests a deeper understanding of the stakes in Ukraine and a willingness from Trump to stand against Putin’s unchecked aggression.

Key takeaways from the Zelenskyy interview:

  • Trump is now speaking more frequently with Zelenskyy, signaling a more engaged approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

  • Zelenskyy praised Trump’s recognition that Putin had lied to him repeatedly, helping cement a more realistic view of the Kremlin.

  • Trump has expressed support for Ukraine reclaiming all its territory a sharp contrast to Biden’s erratic and ineffective messaging.

  • Ukraine and U.S. intelligence coordination has improved, helping Ukraine make faster, smarter battlefield decisions.

Trump’s stance on Ukraine has evolved and it’s clear he now sees the value of pressuring Moscow where it hurts most its energy sector and financial system. Zelenskyy acknowledged that Trump now understands “we can’t just swap territories” a firm rejection of any appeasement-style deals that the Biden White House has subtly floated in the past.

Perhaps most surprising to some was Trump’s Truth Social post, which Zelenskyy welcomed for its optimism.
“He showed that he wants to support Ukraine to the very end,” Zelenskyy said. “I was very positive about signals from the side that Trump and America will be with us to the end of the war.”

Contrast this with the Biden administration’s slow-rolling of aid, lack of strategic clarity, and endless performative speeches. Under Biden, support for Ukraine has often felt muddled and transactional. Trump, on the other hand, is signaling that real leadership means choosing sides and standing firm.

Some context for what’s at stake:

  • Over 14 million Ukrainians have been displaced since the war began.

  • Russia's economy, though sanctioned, continues to fund its war machine thanks to energy loopholes the Biden administration refuses to close.

  • A 2024 Gallup poll shows that only 31% of Americans believe Biden is handling the Ukraine situation effectively.

Zelenskyy reiterated that Kyiv remains committed to peace but only from a position of strength.
“We are ready for peace, but we have to be in strong position,” he told Baier.

And with Trump signaling stronger support than ever before, that position just got a whole lot stronger.
