Trump Weighs ‘Mega Deal’ Involving Drones and Weapons with Zelensky

A bold agreement could strengthen America’s drone capabilities while delivering Ukraine critical weaponry.

President Donald Trump is reportedly on the verge of finalizing a “mega deal” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that could reshape both nations’ military capabilities. The agreement would see the United States acquire advanced, battle-proven Ukrainian drones in exchange for supplying Kyiv with additional American-made weapons, according to reports.

Zelensky confirmed discussions about the potential trade, telling the New York Post, “The people of America need this [drone] technology, and you need to have it in your arsenal.” As part of the deal, Ukraine would also share critical intelligence with the U.S. on the realities of modern warfare, lessons it has learned during its grueling fight against Russia.

“I think this is really a mega deal, a win-win, as they say,” Zelensky stated.

Why This Deal Matters

  • Ukraine’s drone warfare is proving highly effective. Just last month, Ukraine used 117 drones in a coordinated attack inside Russia, destroying 41 aircraft roughly one-third of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers.

  • The U.S. has lagged in drone production. Both Russia and China have surged ahead in manufacturing large numbers of cost-effective drones, while American progress has been bogged down by bureaucratic red tape.

  • Trump’s leadership is driving innovation. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth credited Trump’s policies for dismantling restrictive rules that previously slowed down U.S. drone manufacturing.

Hegseth highlighted Trump’s push in a statement: “In June, President Trump issued an executive order unleashing American drone dominance to bolster our drone industry and arm our warfighters because that’s what we’re all about.”

The Pentagon recently approved hundreds of American-made drone products for military purchase, marking a major step toward closing the gap with foreign adversaries.

Trump’s relationship with Zelensky has shifted from tension earlier this year to cooperation. In February, Zelensky faced criticism in the Oval Office for repeatedly requesting American aid. But with Moscow intensifying attacks on Ukrainian cities, Trump has pledged to increase the supply of defensive weapons.

“They are getting hit very hard. … We’re gonna have to send more weapons,” Trump remarked earlier this month. He added, “I’m disappointed, frankly, that President Putin hasn’t stopped.”

This potential drone deal could give the U.S. access to tested battlefield technology that has outperformed Russian defenses while also strengthening Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. According to recent defense statistics, Russia has lost over 7,000 drones since the start of its invasion, while Ukraine’s fleet continues to evolve and adapt. For the U.S., this collaboration represents not just military aid but also an opportunity to fast-track domestic innovation.

With Trump’s proactive approach to rebuilding American strength and cutting through the bureaucracy of the Biden era, this “mega deal” could mark a turning point for U.S. military readiness.
