Trump Appoints Matthew Whitaker as NATO Ambassador

Former acting Attorney General promises to uphold “America First” values on the global stage.

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Matthew Whitaker, former acting U.S. Attorney General and long-time ally, to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Announcing the decision on Wednesday, Trump praised Whitaker’s dedication to American interests and his commitment to promoting peace and stability.

“Matt is a strong warrior and loyal Patriot, who will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended,” Trump stated. “He will strengthen relationships with our NATO allies and stand firm in the face of threats to peace and stability he will put AMERICA FIRST.”

Whitaker, 55, brings a unique blend of legal, political, and athletic experience to the role:

  • Legal Expertise: Whitaker served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa before being named acting Attorney General in 2018. He holds a B.A., MBA, and J.D. from the University of Iowa.

  • Athletic Achievement: A former college football player, Whitaker was a tight end for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 1988 to 1992 and received a Big Ten award during his tenure.

  • Policy Advocate: An outspoken critic of Russian aggression, Whitaker has called for a unified NATO response to threats in Europe and supported sending heavy weaponry to Ukraine during the 2022 conflict.

Whitaker’s strong stance against Russian interference in U.S. elections and his advocacy for robust NATO solidarity underscore his alignment with Trump’s "peace through strength" doctrine.

Known for his loyalty to Trump and his staunch support of the “America First” agenda, Whitaker’s appointment signals a continuation of the administration’s commitment to prioritizing U.S. interests while strengthening global alliances. His prior comments highlight a readiness to address the pressing challenges facing NATO, particularly in light of Russian aggression and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a 2022 Fox News interview, Whitaker warned that NATO’s unity would be critical in countering Russia’s ambitions. “Without decisive action, Russia will continue its war of aggression in Europe,” Whitaker said.

As NATO faces increasing pressure to adapt to global threats, Whitaker’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment. With a strong advocate for U.S. leadership at the helm, the Trump administration aims to ensure that NATO remains a vital instrument for promoting stability and defending freedom worldwide.
