Trump Campaign Requests Documents From Potential VP Picks
Potential vice presidential candidates under consideration as Trump gears up for 2024.
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has reportedly begun the process of vetting potential vice presidential running mates by requesting documents from several prominent Republicans. Among those approached are North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), and former cabinet member Ben Carson.
However, this list may not be exhaustive. Reports from ABC News suggest that “others are likely to be considered for the No. 2 job,” indicating that the selection process remains dynamic and subject to change based on Trump's discretion.
A Trump campaign spokesperson emphasized the confidentiality and fluid nature of the selection process, stating, “Anyone claiming to know who or when President Trump will choose his VP is lying, unless the person is named Donald J. Trump.”
Polling data from an I&I/TIPP Poll conducted last month revealed that 15% of Republican voters favor Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as their first choice for vice president, with 14% selecting him as their second choice the highest percentages among all candidates.
Of the candidates listed by the Associated Press, Ben Carson ranked highest in the poll with 5% of respondents choosing him as their first choice for VP.
Sen. Tim Scott followed with 4%, while Sen. Marco Rubio garnered 2%, and the remaining candidates each received 1% or less.
Additionally, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has emerged as a noteworthy contender after his robust defense of Trump during a recent NBC News interview. When asked if he would accept a vice presidential offer, Cotton remarked, “Any great patriot, if offered a chance to serve our country by the president, would have to consider it seriously. But what I’m focused on, like the president, is making sure that we win this election in November.”
As Trump’s campaign prepares for the 2024 election, the selection of a vice presidential candidate will be crucial in rallying support and ensuring a strong ticket. With multiple high-profile Republicans in the mix, the decision will undoubtedly have significant implications for the campaign’s strategy and voter appeal.
