U.S. Trade Deals Secured by Trump in Philippines and Indonesia

American goods gain open-market access as Trump delivers yet another economic win.

President Donald Trump continues to rack up major victories on the global trade front, announcing two historic trade deals with the Philippines and Indonesia that promise to boost American exports and strengthen U.S. economic power in Asia.

“It was a beautiful visit, and we concluded our Trade Deal, whereby The Philippines is going OPEN MARKET with the United States, and ZERO Tariffs,” Trump said in a TruthSocial post after meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Trump also confirmed a sweeping agreement with Indonesia, achieved just last week, eliminating nearly all trade barriers for American industrial, tech, and agricultural products. “It is agreed that Indonesia will be Open Market to American Industrial and Tech Products, and Agricultural goods, by eliminating 99% of their Tariff Barriers,” Trump stated.

Key highlights of the new deals include:

  • Philippines: The U.S. will enjoy zero tariffs on all exported goods, while Philippine imports will carry a 19% tariff a slight reduction from the 20% Trump initially threatened.

  • Indonesia: The deal slashes 99% of Indonesia’s tariffs on American goods, opening a lucrative market for U.S. manufacturers and farmers.

  • Trade Pressure: Trump had previously given multiple nations until August 1 to come to the table or face steep tariff hikes a bold stance that is now paying off.

The Philippines, with a population of roughly 115 million about a third of the U.S. ran a $5 billion trade imbalance with America in 2024, exporting $14.2 billion in goods to the U.S. while importing only $9.3 billion. The United States primarily exports foodstuffs and integrated circuits to the Philippines, while importing electronics and machine parts.

These wins follow Trump’s recent success with Vietnam, where he secured an open-market deal that places a 20% tariff on imported Vietnamese goods. Taken together, these trade moves demonstrate Trump’s aggressive but effective strategy to put American producers first.

Beyond trade, Trump has emphasized the importance of strategic military collaboration with the Philippines, a key U.S. ally in the South China Sea. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth reinforced this commitment in a meeting with Marcos, stating, “Our storied alliance has never been stronger or more essential than it is today. … We do not seek confrontation, but we are and will be ready and resolute.”

Trump praised President Marcos as a “highly respected” leader and a “tough negotiator,” while expressing gratitude to the people of the Philippines. These deals not only strengthen America’s economic footing but also send a clear message to China and other competitors: the United States under Trump is once again leading on the world stage.
