Tax Season Starts Early as Trump Tax Cuts Take Effect
With the One Big Beautiful Bill in place, millions of Americans will see larger refunds and take-home pay starting January 26.

Tax season kicks off earlier than usual in 2026 and this time, Americans are actually excited.
Thanks to President Donald Trump’s sweeping One Big Beautiful Bill, signed into law on July 4, 2025, the tax filing season officially begins January 26, one of the earliest starts in the last decade. But this isn't just a date change. It's the beginning of a new era of economic relief for working families and small businesses.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made it clear Thursday: Trump’s mission is to get more money back into the hands of the American people, fast.
“The president wants to get this money into the hands of the American people as soon as possible,” Bessent said. “As withholdings are adjusted, millions will take home bigger paychecks every month this year.”
And those changes are already kicking in. Some highlights of the new law that will impact 2026 filings:
No federal income tax on tips or overtime, giving hourly and service workers a major leg up.
New tax breaks for seniors, easing burdens on retirees hit hard by Biden-era inflation.
Interest on car loans is now tax-deductible, helping working-class Americans keep more of what they earn.
The IRS, led by CEO Frank Bisignano, confirmed it is ready to process over 164 million returns this year, most filed electronically. The agency also noted that its systems have been fully updated to accommodate Trump’s new tax cuts, ensuring a smooth, fast refund process.
“President Trump is committed to the taxpayers of this country,” Bessent emphasized. “This is about growth, freedom, and restoring fairness for the people who actually make this country work.”
The early start isn’t just about efficiency it’s a strategic economic catalyst. By pushing refunds out sooner and boosting monthly take-home pay, the administration expects a significant tailwind for consumer spending and business investment.
Under Biden, Americans endured skyrocketing inflation, an IRS weaponized against political enemies, and endless delays. Now, under Trump’s leadership, the tax system is working for the people again, not against them.
The deadline to file remains April 15, but with more cash coming back into wallets and staying there taxpayers have more reason than ever to file early.
As President Trump sets his sights on continued economic revival, 2026 is shaping up to be the year that Main Street finally gets a break.
