White House Reveals New Tariff Plan as Trump Reshapes Global Trade

Trump delays deadline one week but raises tariffs across the board, hitting surplus nations hard and Canada even harder.

In a bold move just hours before his highly anticipated trade deadline, President Donald Trump has unveiled a sweeping new tariff framework that reshapes the global economic playing field and reinforces his America First trade doctrine like never before.

Announced late Thursday evening, the revised plan pushes back the original August 1 tariff deadline to August 7, giving U.S. Customs and Border Protection time to fully implement the new measures. But make no mistake the tariffs are not going away. They’re expanding.

“President Trump is using tariffs as a necessary and powerful tool to put America First after many years of unsustainable trade deficits that threaten our economy and national security,” the White House said in a statement.

Under the updated policy:

  • A 10% universal tariff will serve as the baseline.

  • Countries with trade surpluses meaning they export more to the U.S. than they import will be hit with minimum tariffs of 15%.

  • Over a dozen countries will face even higher rates, ranging from 19% to a punishing 41%, depending on the size of their trade imbalance.

  • Countries that have reached new trade agreements with the U.S. like South Korea and Japan will face negotiated rates outlined in their respective deals.

But perhaps the most aggressive shift targets Canada, one of America’s largest trading partners. Due to what the administration calls Ottawa’s “failure to cooperate in curbing fentanyl and drug trafficking”, Canada will face an increased tariff of 35%, up from the previous 25%. The increase takes effect August 1, 2025.

“Canada has retaliated against the United States for the President’s actions to address this unusual and extraordinary threat to the United States,” a White House fact sheet stated, citing the growing crisis fueled by synthetic drugs like fentanyl.

Predictably, Canada’s political class is in panic mode. Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a sharp rebuke, posting “Canada shouldn’t settle for anything less than the right deal… Now is not the time to roll over. We need to stand our ground.”

But Trump isn’t bluffing. His administration is dismantling the failed multilateral system that let foreign countries exploit U.S. markets for decades. A senior administration official told reporters that Trump has “essentially reordered global trade,” achieving what the WTO never could real leverage and reciprocity.

Let’s not forget:

  • America’s trade deficit topped $1 trillion under Biden’s disastrous leadership.

  • Cheap foreign goods flooded U.S. markets while our industries crumbled.

  • Other nations paid far less for American innovation, medicine, and energy all while laughing at the weakness of past administrations.

But that era is over. Trump’s tariffs are bringing jobs, factories, and respect back to the United States.

And with his August 7 deadline now locked in, the message to foreign leaders is simple cut a fair deal or pay the price.
