Trump Tells GOP Holdouts to Stop Grandstanding
As budget battle brews, Trump demands Republicans unite behind tax cuts, tariffs, and America First policy.

President Donald Trump issued a blunt message to House Republican holdouts Tuesday night “Stop grandstanding.” Speaking to a packed room at the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) dinner in Washington, Trump laid out a clear directive unite behind the budget plan or risk losing everything to the Democrats.
“We had a great meeting today. I think we are there,” Trump said. “But just in case there are a couple of Republicans out there: you just gotta get there. Close your eyes and get there. It’s a phenomenal bill. Stop grandstanding.”
This wasn’t just political theater. The stakes are sky-high. Trump’s push centers around a budget framework that extends the historic 2017 tax cuts, increases defense and border security spending, and raises the debt ceiling by $5 trillion to prepare for what he called “one big, beautiful bill.”
Here’s what’s on the table:
Extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts set to expire this year a move that could unleash trillions in economic growth.
Billions in additional funding for border security and national defense, countering Biden’s disastrous open-border policies.
New tariffs under Trump’s “Liberation Day” plan to level the playing field and bring jobs back home.
While the Senate framework, passed under reconciliation rules, strips out non-fiscal items due to the Byrd Rule, it’s still a massive win for conservatives—if the House plays ball.
But some House conservatives are dragging their feet. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) remain skeptical, complaining about watered-down spending cuts. Ogles warned that “30 can easily become 50” in terms of GOP no votes—enough to derail the entire process.
Let’s be clear: this is not the time for political purity tests. Trump is right—waiting weeks for ideological tweaks risks handing the entire process to Democrats, who would love nothing more than to replace this America First budget with a globalist, tax-heavy disaster.
The current GOP House majority stands at 220–213. That means leadership can’t afford many defectors. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) pushed back on the internal division, calling for unity: “You’re going to see the Republican Party in both chambers working together as one team.”
Trump, meanwhile, emphasized that if Republicans cave now, they’ll end up with a “Democrat bill or worse.” His warning was clear: “Get it done now. Don’t wait two weeks. Crazy things happen in politics.”
He also blasted GOP lawmakers looking to limit his tariff power. “Congress takes over negotiating sell America fast because you’re going to go busted,” Trump said, mocking countries begging to strike deals under his proposed tariffs.
Economic numbers don’t lie:
Under Trump’s first tax cuts, the U.S. saw GDP growth hit 3.1% in 2018, the highest in over a decade.
Median household income rose by nearly $5,000 between 2016 and 2019.
Illegal border crossings dropped over 70% in the months following his Remain in Mexico policy a policy Democrats quickly dismantled.
Republicans have the momentum, the mandate, and a clear economic plan. The only thing standing in the way is internal sabotage. Trump is leading the charge now it's time for Congress to fall in line and deliver.
