Longest U.S. Government Shutdown Ends as Trump Signs Funding Bill
President secures reopening after 43-day standoff, blocks Democrat push for illegal immigrant healthcare.

President Donald Trump officially ended the longest government shutdown in U.S. history on Wednesday, signing a bill that funds the government through January 30, 2025 after a grueling 43-day standoff that exposed deep divisions in Washington and reinforced Trump’s refusal to cave to the radical Left.
The legislation funds the government at current levels to buy time for negotiations on the fiscal year 2026 budget, while also guaranteeing that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will continue through September. More than 42 million Americans rely on SNAP, and Democrats attempted to weaponize this against Republicans throughout the shutdown.
But the reality? It was Democrats who dragged the shutdown on for over six weeks, refusing to support stopgap measures unless they included leftist poison pills — like expanded Obamacare subsidies and backdoor healthcare access for illegal immigrants.
“They tried to hijack the shutdown to ram through a repeal of Trump’s landmark tax policy,” one House GOP aide noted. “It didn’t work.”
The final Senate vote was 60–40, with eight Democrats breaking ranks and siding with Republicans.
The House followed with its own passage of the clean continuing resolution after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made clear that the Left’s immigration demands were off the table.
The deal reverses layoff orders issued earlier in October and provides back pay to federal workers impacted by the standoff.
The shutdown had caused mounting problems across the country, including flight delays as air traffic controllers and TSA staff began calling out sick or seeking second jobs. But as those disruptions intensified, it was Democrats who blinked, not Trump.
“This is a victory for common sense, for fiscal responsibility, and for the American people,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “The president refused to let Democrats hold this country hostage for the sake of illegal immigrants and failed policies.”
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats continue to push for permanent extensions of Affordable Care Act subsidies a battle they hope to resume in December. Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-SD) agreed to hold a vote later this year, but Speaker Johnson has not committed to putting that legislation on the House floor.
The shutdown began on October 1, after Democrats refused to accept a clean CR, and attempted to insert amendments to weaken Trump’s immigration policies and undo reforms to Medicaid eligibility passed under his signature “big, beautiful bill.”
The fact is simple: Trump and House conservatives held the line. No blank checks. No concessions on illegal immigration. No green light for Biden-era entitlements that the country cannot afford.
And now, with the shutdown over, Trump is refocusing on affordability, border security, and restoring fiscal sanity everything the Democrats continue to undermine.
