Democrat Sheriff Downplays Trump’s Security Despite Assassination Attempts
Law enforcement admits Trump isn't fully protected because he’s only a candidate.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw explained that former President Donald Trump, now the 2024 Republican frontrunner, isn’t receiving the full security protection he would as a sitting president. His remarks came during a press conference after the latest attempt on Trump’s life, the second such incident in just two months. Bradshaw’s justification for the security lapses highlights an alarming disregard for Trump’s safety at a time when political violence is on the rise.
“The golf course is surrounded by shrubbery, so when somebody gets into the shrubbery, they’re pretty much out of sight,” Bradshaw explained, addressing the lax security at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach. But rather than fully owning the oversight, he dismissed the gravity of the situation, stating, “At this level that he is at right now, he’s not the sitting president. If he was, we would have had this entire golf course surrounded.”
Bradshaw’s words make it clear: Trump’s status as a candidate rather than a sitting president is being used as an excuse for leaving him vulnerable to assassination attempts. This kind of indifference to protecting a former president, particularly one under constant threat, raises serious questions about the priorities of local law enforcement.
Just two months ago, Trump was shot in the head in a failed assassination attempt, and this latest incident underscores the ongoing danger he faces. In Sunday’s attack, the assailant was armed with an AK-47 and came within a few hundred yards of Trump before being engaged by the Secret Service. The suspect fled but was later apprehended thanks to a quick-thinking witness who captured a photo of the getaway car.
The Secret Service admitted that the threat level surrounding Trump is high, yet local security measures have remained inadequate.
Since the July assassination attempt, there appears to have been little improvement in the local coordination necessary to ensure Trump’s safety.
In contrast, there’s no record of similar assassination attempts on Joe Biden or Kamala Harris, despite Democrats frequently accusing Trump of inciting violence.
Secret Service spokesperson Rafael Barros claimed that his agency has increased its support following the prior attempt on Trump’s life, but the security failures at Sunday’s event tell a different story. “The threat level is high,” Barros said. “We have increased the amount of assets that we’ve supported.” Yet the fact that a heavily armed suspect could get so close to Trump without immediate intervention suggests otherwise.
The downplaying of security concerns by Sheriff Bradshaw reflects a troubling bias against Trump. The Democratic sheriff’s failure to prioritize protection for the leading Republican candidate, especially after multiple assassination attempts, should be a major concern for voters. The rhetoric from Democrats about lowering political tensions rings hollow when those in power are slow to act in the face of real threats.
In the current political climate, where Trump continues to be a target of violence, security must be taken seriously. If Bradshaw and other Democrats can’t ensure the safety of a former president and current presidential candidate, what does that say about their commitment to law and order?
