Trump Brokers Peace Between Rwanda and Congo in Historic DC Agreement

U.S.-led deal ends years of brutal conflict and opens path to massive mineral trade.

In a landmark foreign policy achievement, President Donald Trump has brokered a U.S.-led peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo ending years of devastating conflict and opening the door to a new era of stability and economic opportunity in Africa’s mineral-rich Great Lakes region.

At a signing ceremony in Washington on Friday, hosted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, foreign ministers from both nations committed to a deal that will see Rwandan troops withdraw from eastern Congo within 90 days and establish joint security coordination. The agreement also launches a regional economic integration framework, positioning the U.S. to gain significant access to Congo’s untapped mineral wealth including cobalt, tantalum, lithium, and gold.

“They were going at it for many years, and with machetes it is one of the worst wars that anyone has ever seen,” Trump said. “And I just happened to have somebody that was able to get it settled. We’re getting, for the United States, a lot of the mineral rights from the Congo as part of it.”

What the Trump-Brokered Deal Includes:

  • Rwandan Withdrawal: Kigali pledges to remove thousands of troops from eastern Congo and support disengagement from the M23 rebel group, widely accused of seizing key cities and mining territories.

  • Security Coordination: Within 30 days, both nations will launch a joint mechanism to monitor troop movements and ensure regional stability.

  • Economic Integration: A framework to expand foreign trade and U.S. investment in critical mineral supply chains will be finalized within 90 days.

  • Support for Peace Talks: The agreement endorses ongoing Qatar-hosted negotiations with M23, reinforcing international backing for a sustainable peace.

Trump’s senior Africa adviser Massad Boulos had previously indicated the administration wanted peace and economic deals signed together. While Friday’s event covered the political peace, another high-level signing focused on minerals is expected soon at the White House.

This deal not only stabilizes one of Africa’s most volatile regions it positions the United States as the key player in the future of global mineral supply. With tensions growing over control of rare earths and green tech materials, Trump’s diplomatic victory delivers both peace and prosperity where it matters most.

The agreement also reflects America’s new stance in global diplomacy: peace through strength and investment not endless intervention. And unlike past efforts by bureaucrats and NGOs, this deal came together under firm American leadership and strategic vision.
