Trump Dismisses Biden's Claim He Could Have Won in 2024

The former president highlights Biden's polling woes and Harris' forced candidacy.

President-elect Donald Trump wasted no time responding to outgoing President Joe Biden’s recent assertion that he could have defeated Trump in the 2024 presidential election had he remained in the race. Speaking at his New Year’s Eve Gala at Mar-a-Lago, Trump dismissed the claim, pointing to Biden’s abysmal polling numbers and disastrous debate performance as evidence to the contrary.

Biden dropped out of the race on July 21, following a series of troubling public appearances and mounting pressure from within his own party. His exit paved the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee a move that many saw as the Democratic Party’s last-ditch effort to salvage their campaign despite Harris’ poor primary track record.

When asked by reporters about Biden’s claim, Trump responded confidently:

“Well, he was way behind, he would have, I assume, not have had a chance. He was way behind her. And we won in record numbers, as you know, every swing state. We won the popular vote by millions and millions of people.”

Trump also took the opportunity to highlight Biden’s debate performance, which he described as pivotal to his downfall:

“He had a chance to do it in the debate. And that didn’t work out too well for him. That was, I guess, the reason that really led to his downfall.”

The numbers back Trump’s assessment. Polling data from mid-2024 revealed Biden trailing far behind Trump, and even falling below Harris in some metrics a damning sign for an incumbent president. His departure from the race and Harris’ subsequent nomination left many questioning the Democratic Party’s strategy, particularly given Harris’ lack of popular support during her own failed 2020 primary bid.

Trump remained gracious in his comments, adding, “Hey look, I wish him well.”

As America looks toward the inauguration, Trump’s commanding win across swing states and his record-setting popular vote margin stand as clear indicators of a resounding mandate. Biden’s claim, like much of his presidency, seems more fantasy than reality.
