Trump to Rename Persian Gulf, Iran Threatens ‘Wrath’
In bold move during Middle East trip, Trump backs Arab allies by adopting “Arabian Gulf,” triggering outrage from Tehran.

President Donald Trump is set to ignite a new diplomatic firestorm in the Middle East by officially renaming the Persian Gulf as the “Arabian Gulf” in U.S. government communications a move that has already drawn furious threats from Iran and is being hailed by America’s Gulf allies.
The change, expected to be announced during Trump’s upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, signals a seismic geopolitical shift in Washington’s alignment in the region. According to sources cited by the Associated Press, two senior U.S. officials confirmed the decision was final.
“Such biased actions are an affront to all Iranians,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry official Seyed Abbas Araghchi, warning that Trump’s move would “bring the wrath of all Iranians from all walks of life and political persuasion.”
The renaming touches a centuries-old nerve. While Iran historically known as Persia claims the historical precedent for the name “Persian Gulf,” Arab states bordering the waterway have long referred to it as the ‘Arabian Gulf,’ arguing that the label more accurately reflects the modern balance of power.
For Trump, it’s about more than labels. It’s about choosing sides and standing firmly with America’s strongest allies in the Middle East.
Iran has the longest coastline along the gulf, but the U.S. now supports the regional Arab bloc in asserting influence.
The Gulf is vital to global oil trade, with roughly one-third of the world’s seaborne crude passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The name “Persian Gulf” has appeared on maps since the 16th century, but Trump sees no reason to cling to what he views as outdated symbolism.
“Politically motivated attempts to alter the historically established name… are indicative of hostile intent,” Araghchi fumed on X.
This isn’t Trump’s first geopolitical rebranding either. During his first term, the administration informally referred to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in trade-related briefings a symbolic swipe at globalist naming conventions that treated America like just another country.
Trump’s Middle East pivot could not come at a more critical time. The U.S. is entering its third round of nuclear talks with Tehran, while Iran continues to fund proxies across the region and defy international norms.
And now, the gloves are off.
By renaming the Persian Gulf, Trump isn’t just trolling the mullahs he’s drawing a line in the sand, affirming that America stands with its Arab allies against a regime that chants “Death to America,” funds terrorism, and continues to pursue nuclear weapons.
“Everyone knew Trump’s friendship was for sale to the highest bidder. We now know that his geography is, too,” Iran’s former Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said back in 2017, when Trump first floated the term.
But Zarif’s jab only reinforces what Trump voters already know: this president doesn’t apologize for American power. And he doesn’t ask permission to change maps drawn by global elites who never have to answer to real voters.
As the Biden-era appeasement fades into history, Trump’s second term is restoring clarity and courage to U.S. foreign policy and the world is taking notice.
