Trump Claims Cambodia-Thailand Peace Near After Phone Discussions

President mediates phone calls with both nations, pushing for a ceasefire before trade talks proceed.

President Donald Trump announced over the weekend that peace between Cambodia and Thailand is “imminent” after a series of direct phone calls with leaders from both countries. While traveling in Scotland, Trump spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai in an effort to broker a ceasefire in their border conflict.

“Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand,” Trump posted on Truth Social Saturday. “I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging. We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!”

Shortly after, Trump provided an update on his call with Thailand’s acting prime minister. “I have just spoken to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, and it was a very good conversation,” he said. “Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate Ceasefire, and PEACE. I am now going to relay that message back to the Prime Minister of Cambodia. After speaking to both Parties, Ceasefire, Peace, and Prosperity seems to be a natural. We will soon see!”

Trump’s push for peace included three key steps:

  • Direct talks with both leaders: Trump held separate calls with Hun Manet and Phumtham Wechayachai to discuss halting the violence.

  • Trade leverage: He emphasized that U.S. trade negotiations with both nations will remain paused until hostilities end.

  • Ceasefire commitment: Both leaders reportedly agreed to meet and work out an immediate ceasefire.

Later, Trump confirmed that his efforts had made progress: “Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also looking to get back to the ‘Trading Table’ with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS. They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!”

The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand is raising international concerns. Thailand, a long-standing U.S. ally with a modernized military, faces off against Cambodia, which maintains strong ties with Communist China. A prolonged conflict could disrupt Southeast Asian stability and draw in greater global interest.

Trump compared the situation to past international disputes he has worked to defuse: “It very much reminds me of the Conflict between Pakistan and India, which was brought to a successful halt,” he said.

The president concluded his remarks by saying he looks forward to finalizing trade agreements with both nations once peace is restored. “It was an Honor to deal with both Countries. They have a long and storied History and Culture. They will hopefully get along for many years to come.”
