Trump Fumes Over Elon Musk's Criticism of 'One Big, Beautiful Bill'
After Musk torches GOP-backed spending bill as wasteful and bloated, Trump and Speaker Johnson scramble to defend it amid growing conservative backlash.

The bromance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk just hit turbulence.
After the tech billionaire blasted the "One Big, Beautiful Bill" as a pork-stuffed disaster that deepens the debt crisis, Trump is reportedly livid, and House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed it during a Wednesday press conference.
“He’s not delighted that Elon did a 180 on that,” Johnson told reporters. “Everybody can draw their own conclusions about that, okay?”
Elon Musk’s critique wasn’t subtle. On Tuesday, he posted on X:
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination.”
He accused lawmakers of betraying the public trust by pushing $2.5 trillion in new deficit spending, warning that Americans are being shackled to “crushingly unsustainable debt.”
And he didn’t stop there. Musk doubled down on Wednesday, calling for a new bill that doesn’t grow the deficit and openly questioned how anyone who actually reads the bill could support it.
That criticism hit a nerve in Trumpworld, especially since Musk had just completed a special government stint overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump initiative to reduce federal waste. Despite Musk’s sharp words, Trump hasn’t responded directly, though he did share a post where Musk expressed gratitude for the opportunity and optimism about DOGE’s future.
Meanwhile, Johnson attempted damage control, claiming he had spoken to Musk earlier and that the conversation had been “encouraging.” He tried to reframe the bill as an economic boost, insisting:
“Every single American is going to do better once the bill is enacted into law… It’s going to be jet fuel for the U.S. economy.”
But not everyone’s buying it. While Johnson touts $1.6 trillion in “savings” and claims the bill fulfills GOP promises, conservative critics including Sen. Rand Paul are lining up behind Musk.
“I agree with Elon,” Paul said on X. “We have both seen the massive waste in government spending and we know another $5 trillion in debt is a huge mistake.”
Even Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries jumped on Musk’s comments, calling the bill the “GOP Tax Scam” and declaring, “Truer words have never been spoken.”
So what’s really at stake?
The bill retains Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, but also lifts the debt ceiling again.
It’s packed with provisions critics say are stuffed with special interest payouts.
Musk warns it undercuts DOGE’s mission by adding trillions in new debt, wiping out any gains made in curbing government waste.
Trump, while praising Musk’s work on waste reduction, has made it clear he's "sticking to" the bill. His White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt brushed off the drama, saying Trump already knows Musk’s position and is unmoved.
But Musk’s rebellion is a warning shot. With populist conservatives increasingly wary of the DC uniparty’s spending addiction, the backlash could grow especially with midterms looming and the Senate now considering the bill.
Trump’s base doesn’t want more debt. They want accountability, restraint, and real reform.
If even Elon Musk the man brought in to clean up government says this bill is a betrayal, maybe it’s time for America First leaders to ask if they’re drifting too close to the swamp they promised to drain.
