Trump Pauses Mexico Tariffs After Call With President Sheinbaum
The move signals strong cooperation on border security and trade.

President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause on tariffs against Mexico following a productive call with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The decision comes just days after Trump’s new 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, along with a 10% tariff on China, officially took effect.
“After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “This Agreement is until April 2nd.”
The pause offers temporary relief for Mexico but maintains Trump’s strong stance on trade.
Trump emphasized that the decision was an "accommodation" out of "respect" for Sheinbaum.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to tackling illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
The move highlights Trump’s diplomatic leverage in securing commitments from Mexico on critical issues, particularly border security. Sheinbaum acknowledged the positive relationship, confirming that both nations would continue working together to reduce illegal crossings and combat drug smuggling.
Trump’s America-first trade policy remains firmly in place, with reciprocal tariffs set to be announced on April 2. While Mexico has been granted a temporary reprieve, the broader strategy signals a continued push for fair trade and stronger enforcement on migration and security.
Stay tuned April 2nd could mark another major shift in U.S. trade policy. Share this article or subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
