Trump Celebrates GOP Wins in Meeting with House Republicans

With a slim House majority, Trump looks to shape Congress and build his administration.

President-elect Donald Trump met with House Republicans Wednesday morning, kicking off his post-election tour of Washington with a celebration of the GOP’s recent victories. In his usual confident style, Trump lauded his team’s performance on Election Day and praised the “historic kind of numbers” achieved by Republicans, who gained several seats in the House and maintained their majority.

“It’s always nice to win,” Trump began, adding that the GOP’s success prevented what could have been a significant loss in the House. “The House did very well,” he continued, noting that Republicans had come out of the election with a slim but crucial majority. “When you get used to a one-vote majority,” Trump said, “you can get used to anything.”

Trump also addressed his latest Cabinet appointments, joking that he had already tapped two House Republicans Elise Stefanik (NY) as U.N. Ambassador and Michael Waltz (FL) as National Security Advisor. Playfully suggesting he might need “at least 15” House members in his administration, Trump quipped that he might come back to recruit more GOP representatives in the future.

During the meeting, Trump reaffirmed his support for House Speaker Mike Johnson, calling him a “tremendous guy” and stating, “I’m with him all the way.” Johnson, who introduced Trump to the GOP conference, described Trump as the “comeback king” and a “singular figure in American history.”

Trump’s meeting with House Republicans signals a united front as the GOP prepares to advance a conservative agenda. With the House majority firmly in Republican hands, Trump’s focus will likely turn to bolstering his administration and ensuring a smooth legislative path. Later today, Trump is scheduled to meet with outgoing President Joe Biden at the White House, marking another key moment in this historic post-election period.
