Poll Shows Trump Ahead of Biden in Georgia as First Debate Nears
Crucial Swing State Poll Indicates Growing Support for Trump.
Former President Donald Trump holds a significant lead over President Joe Biden in Georgia, a key battleground state, just before their first presidential debate. The Atlanta-Journal Constitution poll found Trump ahead by 5 points, with 43% of likely Georgia voters supporting him compared to 38% for Biden. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. trailed with 9%, while 8% remained undecided.
The poll also revealed that:
1% of respondents would not vote.
1% planned to vote for Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver.
1% intended to vote for a different candidate.
Georgia, with its 16 electoral votes, could be pivotal in determining the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 5th. This polling data comes just days before Trump and Biden face off in the first debate of the election cycle, set for Thursday, June 27th, in Atlanta.
Additional polling data suggests Biden may be struggling in other swing states as well. A Bloomberg News and Morning Consult poll in May showed Trump leading Biden in five of seven swing states and tied in a sixth. Specifically:
Trump led by 5 points in Arizona.
He was ahead by 7 points in North Carolina.
Held a 2-point lead in Pennsylvania.
Was up by 1 point in Wisconsin.
Led by 3 points in Georgia, according to a different survey.
Furthermore, an ABC News/Ipsos poll indicated voters trust Trump more than Biden to handle critical issues such as the economy, immigration, and crime. These topics are expected to be among the top concerns for voters in the upcoming election. A Harvard Harris poll showed a broader approval of Trump's past performance compared to Biden’s current ratings.
Biden’s handling of the border and immigration has been particularly criticized. A Newsweek poll by Redfield and Wilton Strategies revealed that only 20% of eligible voters believe the U.S. has control over its borders. Another Harvard Harris poll, in conjunction with the Center for American Political Studies, found only 36% of voters approve of Biden’s handling of immigration, marking his lowest issue-specific approval rating for four consecutive months.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, these polls suggest growing support for Trump and potential challenges for Biden in retaining critical swing state votes.
