Trump Vows to Make IVF Accessible to All Americans Through Government or Insurance Mandates
Former President pledges to support American families with groundbreaking IVF policy.
Former President Donald Trump has pledged that his administration will ensure in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments are accessible to all Americans, either by having the federal government cover the costs or by mandating that insurance companies do so. Speaking before a rally in Potterville, Michigan, Trump emphasized his long-standing support for IVF, framing it as essential to fostering strong, thriving families in the United States.
“I’ve always been for IVF,” Trump stated when asked by a reporter about his stance on the issue. “It’s helping women, men, and families. We need great children, beautiful children in our country; we actually need them. Under the Trump administration, we are going to be paying for that treatment … for all Americans to get it.”
During his rally, Trump officially introduced his proposal, declaring, “I am announcing today that under the Trump administration, your government will pay for or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for all costs associated with IVF treatment. Because we want more babies, to put it very nicely.”
This promise to cover IVF treatments represents a significant policy shift, particularly within the Republican Party, traditionally more focused on limiting government intervention in healthcare. Trump further extended his support to new parents by proposing that they be allowed to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes, making family life more affordable and accessible.
The discussion around IVF gained national attention earlier this year when the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are children, a decision that sparked controversy across the political spectrum. Trump was vocal in his opposition to any limitations on IVF, urging the Alabama legislature to act swiftly to protect access to fertility treatments. In response, the Alabama legislature passed a bill securing IVF access, which was signed into law by Republican Governor Kay Ivey.
Despite Trump’s advocacy for IVF, his stance has drawn criticism from Vice President Kamala Harris, who blamed him for the Alabama ruling and its broader implications. Harris accused Trump of being the "architect of this entire crisis," pointing to his appointment of three Supreme Court justices who played pivotal roles in overturning Roe v. Wade.
As Trump continues to push forward with his pro-family agenda, his commitment to making IVF widely accessible could resonate with a broad spectrum of voters. His stance highlights a growing recognition of the challenges many American families face and reflects his willingness to adopt policies that support family growth and stability.
