Trump Cuts 6,000 Jobs at IRS Amid Government Efficiency Push
Executive Order Targets Non-Essential Positions and Reduces Bureaucratic Waste.

The Trump administration is set to lay off approximately 6,000 IRS employees on Thursday as part of a broader effort to streamline government operations and cut bureaucratic waste. According to The New York Times, the layoffs will primarily affect probationary employees deemed non-critical to the current tax filing season.
Emails obtained by the Times show IRS managers instructing staff to return government-issued equipment, signaling the scale of the impending job cuts. “Under an executive order, I.R.S. has been directed to terminate probationary employees who were not deemed critical to filing season,” one internal memo read.
This decision aligns with President Donald Trump’s ongoing mission to reduce federal spending and improve efficiency within government agencies. The move comes after the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 and the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 collectively clawed back over $21 billion from the IRS budget, originally allocated under Biden’s $740 billion “Inflation Reduction Act.”
The Inflation Reduction Act had included a controversial provision to hire 87,000 new IRS agents, a plan heavily criticized by conservatives who warned it would lead to increased audits on middle-class Americans. Despite assurances from the Biden administration that the focus would be on high-income earners and large corporations, concerns remained widespread.
Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) previously claimed, “Millions of Americans aren’t going to be impacted by that other than getting better service from the IRS.” However, many Americans saw the expansion as a step toward government overreach.
Trump has consistently emphasized the need to eliminate unnecessary spending and focus federal resources where they are most needed. The IRS cuts are part of a larger initiative spearheaded by the General Services Administration (GSA) to eliminate non-essential consulting contracts across all federal agencies.
“Consistent with the goals and directives of the Trump administration to eliminate waste, reduce spending, and increase efficiency, GSA has taken the first steps in a government-wide initiative to eliminate non-essential consulting contracts,” an internal administration email stated, according to The Hill.
The president reinforced this approach last week, saying, “The Internal Revenue Service will be looked at like everybody else, just about everybody is going to be looked at.” Trump’s comments reflect his administration’s commitment to holding every agency accountable and ensuring taxpayer dollars are not squandered.
This move is a sharp contrast to the Biden administration’s spending strategy, which prioritized expanding the IRS with tens of thousands of new agents. Instead of building bureaucracy, Trump is focusing on efficiency and fiscal discipline.
By cutting unnecessary jobs, the administration aims to reduce the size of the federal government and reallocate resources to more critical areas of governance. These cuts also serve as a message to other federal agencies that inefficiency and waste will not be tolerated.
As the IRS faces these significant staff reductions, Americans can expect a more streamlined, focused agency that prioritizes effective tax administration over bureaucratic bloat. The Trump administration's approach not only ensures fiscal responsibility but also reaffirms its commitment to protecting taxpayers from an overbearing government.
