Trump Warns of Tariffs on Nations Opposing Greenland Deal

As Russia and China circle the Arctic, Trump makes clear the U.S. must act with or without Denmark’s blessing.

President Trump just made it unmistakably clear: the United States will do whatever it takes to secure Greenland including slapping tariffs on countries that try to stand in the way.

Speaking at a rural health care roundtable Friday, Trump reiterated what many in Washington refuse to accept Greenland isn’t just a frozen landmass it’s a strategic goldmine, critical for U.S. national security.

“I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland because we need Greenland for national security,” Trump stated.

This isn’t a new idea for Trump, who has long eyed Greenland’s location as essential to protecting U.S. interests in the Arctic especially in light of increasing aggression from China and Russia in the region. But after Denmark, which currently controls Greenland, doubled down on rejecting any transfer, Trump escalated the issue with a clear warning to any nation trying to block America’s strategic reach.

Greenland, while often ignored by the foreign policy establishment, holds massive geopolitical value:

  • It offers a critical military vantage point over the Arctic and North Atlantic.

  • The U.S. already maintains Thule Air Base there a key early-warning radar and missile defense site.

  • It’s rich in untapped rare earth minerals, the kind China has a stranglehold on.

Trump also referenced NATO’s role in the region and suggested the U.S. has been coordinating with the alliance to secure a broader strategy. He warned that without American control, Greenland could easily fall into Russian or Chinese hands something that would create a “hole in national security.”

“If we don’t take Greenland, Russia or China will take Greenland, and I am not going to let that happen,” Trump said aboard Air Force One on Sunday.

He didn’t mince words about Greenland’s vulnerability either: “Greenland’s security is basically two dog sleds,” Trump quipped, pointing to the looming presence of Russian and Chinese destroyers and submarines already operating nearby.

Predictably, Democrats and a few soft Republicans are crying foul. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Thom Tillis (R-NC) flew to Denmark Friday to assure the Danish government that Congress would oppose any U.S. acquisition of Greenland.

“I think you will find that support in Congress to acquire Greenland in any way is not there,” Murkowski smugly declared.

This is the exact kind of weak, globalist thinking that has let our adversaries surge ahead for decades. China now controls over 60% of the world’s rare earth processing, Russia is building up Arctic bases, and yet Washington elites are more worried about offending Copenhagen than defending America’s future.

Let’s be clear: Trump’s Greenland push isn’t about land grabbing it’s about securing a strategic outpost before our enemies do. It’s about projecting strength, not apologizing for ambition. And if tariffs are what it takes to wake up our NATO partners and hostile nations alike, then so be it.

Trump understands that in the 21st century, national security is global, and Greenland is ground zero in the Arctic chessboard. Unlike Biden and his cronies, Trump is actually playing to win.
