Democrat Senator Claims Trump’s Foreign Policy Helps Adversaries

Ben Cardin argues America First agenda undermines global credibility despite evidence to the contrary.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s assertive foreign policy vision, claiming it would bolster adversaries like Russia and China. Speaking on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, the 81-year-old senator questioned Trump’s remarks about reclaiming the Panama Canal or purchasing Greenland, framing them as damaging to America’s global credibility.

“It’s a serious statement because it affects America’s credibility globally,” Cardin said. “Our allies don’t know whether we are reliable partners or not.”

Cardin specifically pointed to the Panama Canal, emphasizing that its management is bound by a treaty ratified by Congress. He argued that Trump’s comments could create doubt among allies about the U.S. as a reliable partner.

Ignoring Trump’s Track Record

Despite Cardin’s claims, Trump’s first term demonstrated his ability to achieve results on the global stage:

  • NATO Reinforcement: Trump pressured NATO members to increase defense spending, reversing years of underfunding by key allies. His efforts led to a significant boost in NATO’s collective strength.

  • Trade Policy: Trump’s renegotiation of trade deals prioritized American workers and signaled that the U.S. would no longer tolerate unfair practices by nations like China.

  • Peace Initiatives: Trump brokered historic peace deals in the Middle East, a feat that brought stability to a volatile region.

Cardin’s remarks echo the Democratic Party’s long-standing resistance to Trump’s America First approach, which prioritizes U.S. interests while demanding accountability from allies. Critics often conflate bold rhetoric with recklessness, ignoring the results Trump has delivered.

The Russia and China Argument

Cardin claimed that Trump’s approach plays into Russia’s and China’s hands, suggesting it encourages other nations to align with America’s adversaries. However, this perspective neglects the fact that Trump’s foreign policy has consistently countered these nations’ aggression:

  • China: Trump’s tough stance on trade and military build-up in the Indo-Pacific served as a direct challenge to Beijing’s ambitions.

  • Russia: By strengthening NATO and increasing U.S. energy independence, Trump undercut Moscow’s leverage over Europe.

Cardin’s suggestion that America’s credibility is weakened under Trump fails to account for the confidence shown by allies that have stepped up their commitments under his leadership.

As Trump’s second term approaches, his foreign policy agenda will likely continue prioritizing strength and accountability. The real question isn’t whether the U.S. can be trusted but whether critics like Cardin can accept that a strong America benefits the world.
