Trump Delays 50% EU Tariffs After Von Der Leyen Backs Down
President gives Europe until July to strike a fair trade deal or face massive tariff hike.

President Donald Trump has once again proven that tough leadership works. Just days after announcing a steep 50% tariff on European Union imports, Trump agreed to delay the enforcement after EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen personally called and asked for more time to negotiate.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen… requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline… I agreed to the extension July 9, 2025 It was my privilege to do so.” The European leader, in her own words, confirmed she had a “good call” with Trump and that “Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.”
This isn’t just diplomacy it’s victory through strength.
The move comes after Trump accused the EU of systematically taking advantage of the U.S. through:
Massive VAT taxes on American goods,
Crushing regulatory penalties on U.S. companies,
Manipulative monetary policies,
And trade barriers that have resulted in a staggering $250 billion annual trade deficit.
In Trump’s own words: “The European Union… has been very difficult to deal with. Their powerful Trade Barriers… have led to a Trade Deficit with the U.S. of more than $250,000,000 a year, a number which is totally unacceptable.”
Trump originally set June 1 as the activation date for his new 50% tariff escalating his “Liberation Day” trade strategy. The tariffs were part of a broader campaign to force global trading partners to stop fleecing American workers and bring jobs back home. While critics screamed “protectionism,” Europe blinked. And the result? Serious negotiations are now finally on the table.
Let’s be clear: there was no tariff if the product was made in the United States. The message? Build here or pay up.
The European Union’s sudden willingness to play ball echoes what we’ve seen from other countries. Just this month, the U.S. reached new tariff concessions with China, and a trade deal framework was unveiled with the United Kingdom. The Trump administration is sending one unmistakable message: America will no longer be the world’s doormat.
This delay is not a retreat it’s a calculated flex. Trump offered the EU a final chance to deal fairly. If they don’t, come July 9, they’ll face the consequences of decades of bad behavior. And this time, the U.S. won’t back down.
