Trump Signs Executive Order to Abolish Department of Education, Declares: ‘It’s Going to Work’

President Trump takes bold action to return control to parents and states, ending decades of federal overreach.

President Donald Trump officially signed an executive order on Thursday dismantling the Department of Education. This is not just a campaign promise fulfilled it’s a decisive step toward restoring control over education to the parents, states, and local communities where it belongs.

Standing alongside key Republican governors and education freedom advocates, Trump made it clear the days of bloated federal bureaucrats dictating what children are taught are coming to an end.

Here’s what the order delivers:

  • Education Secretary Linda McMahon is directed to shut down the Department of Education and hand authority back to states and local districts.

  • Federal funding will no longer be tied to illegal discrimination masked under “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” (DEI) policies or radical gender ideology.

  • Services and programs relied on by American families will continue uninterrupted during the transition.

“Everybody knows it’s right. The Democrats know it’s right,” Trump declared. “We’re going to return education back to the states where it belongs. It’s a common sense thing to do, and it’s going to work.”

He’s right. Despite the U.S. spending over $16,000 per student annually the highest globally our students consistently rank near the bottom in reading and math scores. Under Biden’s watch, 13-year-olds’ scores hit their lowest in decades while the administration shoveled billions into DEI initiatives and bureaucratic red tape, ignoring the real issues plaguing American classrooms.

The numbers don’t lie:

  • $80 billion in taxpayer funds flow annually through the Department of Education, with little oversight or positive results.

  • Over $600 million in grants for “divisive” teacher training programs have already been terminated under Trump’s leadership.

  • Federal student loan debt has ballooned to an eye-watering $1.6 trillion, yet academic outcomes remain stagnant or declining.

Virginia Gentles, a former Department of Education official, called the federal government's role in education “abysmal,” pointing out the steady decline in academic performance since the department’s inception. “The highly paid bureaucrats in Washington need to have their control diminished,” she emphasized.

Critics of the status quo agree. Nicole Neily, president of Parents Defending Education, didn’t mince words: “The status quo has very clearly failed American children and done little more than line the pockets of bureaucrats and activists.”

Trump’s executive order won’t be the end of the road. To fully eliminate the Department of Education, an act of Congress is required. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced he plans to introduce legislation to formally close the department, aligning with Trump’s commitment to drain the education swamp once and for all.

This isn’t just bureaucratic housekeeping it’s about protecting our kids, supporting teachers who want to teach not indoctrinate and putting parents back in charge. Trump made it clear: “Teachers are among the most important people in this country, and we’re going to take care of our teachers.”

It’s time to stop funding failure and start focusing on what works: local control, parental rights, and real education.
