Trump Gives Drug Companies 60 Days to Slash Prices
With a bold ultimatum, Trump demands Big Pharma match global rates or face consequences for gouging Americans.

President Donald Trump just threw down the gauntlet on Big Pharma and American families could finally see relief from the sky-high drug prices that have plagued them for decades.
In a series of direct letters sent to the CEOs of 17 major pharmaceutical companies, Trump gave them 60 days to slash their prices and match the rates they charge in foreign countries. Citing an “unacceptable burden on hardworking American families,” Trump warned that the era of Americans subsidizing the rest of the world’s medicine ends now.
“Moving forward, the only thing I will accept from drug manufacturers is a commitment that provides American families immediate relief… and an end to the free ride of American innovation by European and other developed nations,” Trump declared.
Each company received a nearly identical letter tied to Trump’s executive order titled “Delivering Most-Favored-Nation Prescription Drug Pricing to American Patients” a move that demands Americans pay no more than the lowest price offered elsewhere in the world.
Here’s what the order demands:
Full portfolios of drugs sold at MFN (Most-Favored-Nation) pricing for Medicaid patients
Guarantees that new drugs will launch at MFN pricing
Reallocation of profits from “freeloading” countries to reduce U.S. costs
Authorization for direct drug purchases at MFN rates
The 17 companies targeted include household names like Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie, Eli Lilly, Novartis, and Merck firms that have long been accused of gouging American patients while offering steep discounts abroad.
According to Trump, American drug prices are “up to three times higher” than those in other countries for the exact same medicines a claim backed by decades of studies showing U.S. patients pay the most for pharmaceuticals in the developed world.
And it’s not just Trump sounding the alarm. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. noted in May that a 20% price increase abroad would slash American prices significantly by ending foreign freeloading on U.S. innovation.
This isn’t the first time Trump has gone to war with the drug lobby. Earlier this year, he signed an order to boost domestic production of critical medicines and remove red tape strangling innovation. But now, he’s demanding action or else.
“If you refuse to step up, we will deploy every tool in our arsenal to protect American families from continued abusive drug pricing practices,” Trump wrote.
This isn’t lip service. It’s a policy shift that could save American families thousands and finally put Big Pharma on notice. For decades, politicians on both sides promised to take on drug companies but only Trump is forcing their hand with the weight of the presidency.
The deadline? September 29.
That gives Big Pharma 60 days to decide whether they’ll finally serve the American people or face the consequences.
