Trump Issues Ultimatum to D.C. Mayor Over ‘Unsightly’ Homeless Encampments
The president warns Bowser to restore order or he’ll do it himself.

President Donald Trump has issued a stern ultimatum to Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser: clean up the city’s sprawling homeless encampments, or the federal government will step in and do it for her. Trump’s warning comes as the nation’s capital faces an unprecedented surge in crime, drug use, and lawlessness problems that Bowser’s Democrat-led government has failed to address.
“We have notified the Mayor of Washington, D.C., that she must clean up all of the unsightly homeless encampments in the City, specifically including the ones outside of the State Department, and near the White House,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “If she is not capable of doing so, we will be forced to do it for her! Washington, D.C. must become CLEAN and SAFE!”
Homelessness and crime have skyrocketed in Washington, D.C., under Democrat leadership, turning once-proud landmarks into dangerous, drug-infested encampments. The area near the White House and State Department where world leaders visit and Americans gather has become littered with tents, trash, and criminal activity.
Trump’s demand is part of a broader effort by his administration to bring order back to the nation’s capital. He has previously floated the idea of taking over D.C. governance entirely, arguing that local leadership has failed its citizens.
“I think that we should govern the District of Columbia,” Trump said last month. “I think that we should run it strong, run it with law and order, make it absolutely flawless… We could save people from getting killed.”
Bowser is also facing mounting pressure from congressional Republicans who are tired of the city’s spiraling decline. Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) introduced legislation this week to rename Black Lives Matter Plaza to Liberty Plaza, arguing that “we are not a defund-the-police nation.”
Meanwhile, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) have introduced a bill to end “home rule” in D.C., citing rampant crime and the city’s push to allow non-citizens to vote. If passed, the legislation would bring Washington, D.C., back under full congressional control, stripping the Democrat-led city government of its authority.
Despite Bowser’s previous claims that homeless encampments are “not technically permitted,” her administration has allowed them to fester, while prioritizing political posturing over real solutions. She has hinted at being open to working with Trump’s team on crime but has yet to take any decisive action.
“The mural inspired millions of people and helped our city through a painful period, but now we can’t afford to be distracted by meaningless congressional interference,” Bowser said in response to congressional efforts to reclaim control of the city.
D.C. residents deserve safety, order, and leadership willing to enforce the law. If Bowser refuses to act, Trump has made it clear that he will.
