Assassination Files on JFK, RFK, and MLK Jr. Declassified by Trump

Long-awaited transparency promises to unveil decades-old secrets behind historic assassinations.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to fully declassify government files related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

“A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades,” Trump said as he signed the order. “And everything will be revealed.” He handed the pen used to sign the order to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary, who is also the son of RFK and nephew of JFK.

The declassification effort will address decades of speculation and secrecy surrounding the assassinations. According to the National Archives and Records Administration, roughly 97% of the JFK assassination files have been released to the public, but 3,000 documents remain classified and 30,000 contain redactions. Trump’s order seeks to release all of these files and expand the scope to include those related to RFK and MLK Jr.

Key Provisions of the Executive Order

  • Immediate Review: The Director of National Intelligence and Attorney General have 15 days to create a plan for the full release of JFK-related files.

  • Expansion to RFK and MLK Jr.: The administration has 45 days to develop a plan for the complete release of records tied to the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

  • Transparency Focus: Trump’s order emphasizes that withholding information is “not consistent with the public interest” and that the American people and the families of these figures deserve the truth.

The release of the JFK files has been a contentious issue for decades. The 1992 JFK Assassination Records Collection Act mandated full disclosure by 2017, but past administrations, including Trump’s first term and President Joe Biden’s administration, permitted agencies to delay full transparency.

Trump’s latest order overturns those delays, stating, “The release of all records in the Federal Government’s possession pertaining to these assassinations is long overdue.”

JFK’s assassination on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, has been the subject of intense debate, with theories ranging from lone gunman Lee Harvey Oswald to broader conspiracies involving the CIA, FBI, or foreign governments. The assassinations of RFK and MLK Jr. have similarly spurred speculation, with questions about the motives and potential cover-ups.

The executive order promises to shed light on these dark chapters of American history, offering long-awaited transparency.

The administration’s timeline ensures that plans for the release of these documents will be in place within weeks, with the potential for public access to follow shortly after. The move underscores Trump’s focus on transparency and commitment to delivering on a promise that many presidents before him avoided.
