Trump Confirms Three Network Debates, Labels Harris as 'Barely Competent'
As the debate stage is set, Trump challenges Harris's qualifications.
Former President Donald Trump announced during a press conference on Thursday that he has agreed to three debates against Vice President Kamala Harris. These debates are set to occur on three different television networks throughout September, pending Harris's confirmation.
The press conference was held at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, where he revealed that the first debate is scheduled on Fox News on September 4. The second debate will take place on ABC on September 10, and the final debate is planned for NBC on September 25. Trump stated that the NBC debate had reached "a fairly full agreement, subject to them," indicating that only minor details remain to be finalized.
"We have spoken to the heads of the networks, and it’s all been confirmed other than some fairly minor details," Trump said. However, the former president noted that Harris’s camp still needs to agree to the terms. "The other side has to agree to the terms. They may or may not agree. I don’t know. She hasn’t done an interview. She can’t do an interview. She’s barely competent," he remarked.
In recent weeks, Harris has criticized Trump for suggesting that he wanted to wait for her official nomination before fully committing to the debates. While Trump initially hesitated, saying he would “probably” debate Harris, he also mentioned that he could "make a case for not doing it."
During the press conference, Trump criticized Harris’s performance as vice president, especially regarding the border crisis, and highlighted her premature exit from the 2020 Democratic primary. "The presidency was taken away from Joe Biden," Trump argued. "He had the right to run, and they took it away."
Trump continued, “You would’ve thought they would’ve gone out to a vote, they would’ve had a primary system, they would’ve done something, but to just take it away from him like he was a child. He had 14 million votes. [Harris] had no votes."
Following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race on July 21, he passed the mantle to Harris. However, Harris has yet to conduct a major interview or hold a press conference. Instead, Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, are campaigning across seven battleground states.
The Trump campaign initially reported the debate dates with NBC on September 10 and ABC on September 25. However, they later clarified the correct order, with the ABC debate scheduled for the 10th and NBC hosting on the 25th.
As the debates draw near, all eyes will be on Harris to see if she agrees to the proposed schedule and how she performs against Trump. With significant issues like the border crisis and election integrity at the forefront, these debates are expected to be crucial in shaping public opinion ahead of the 2024 election.
