Trump Undocumented Immigrants to Be Excluded from Upcoming Census

President orders Commerce Department to begin accurate, citizenship-based population count.

President Donald Trump announced Thursday morning that illegal immigrants will not be counted in the next U.S. census, marking a bold step to ensure representation in Congress reflects legal citizenship not inflated headcounts that benefit sanctuary states.

“People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024.”

Trump’s move is a direct rebuke of the Census Bureau’s current practice, which includes illegal aliens or as the Bureau calls them, “unauthorized migrants” in population totals used for everything from House seat apportionment to Electoral College representation.

This isn’t just about data it’s about representation, fairness, and integrity. Under the current system, states like California, New York, and Illinois get rewarded with extra congressional seats because of their massive illegal immigrant populations, while red states like Florida and Texas get shortchanged something the Census Bureau admitted happened after the flawed 2020 count.

In 2022, the Census Bureau acknowledged that several red states were undercounted, including Florida and Texas, while blue states like New York and Massachusetts were overcounted giving them more power in Congress and the Electoral College than they deserved.

Now, Trump is putting an end to that rigged system.

Key points from Trump’s new directive:

  • Illegal immigrants will be excluded from population counts used for congressional representation.

  • The Commerce Department is to start developing a new, modernized census immediately.

  • The 2024 election results will be used to help shape population metrics and verify accuracy.

  • This move aims to prevent redistricting fraud and ensure fair representation in the 2030 cycle.

Democrats are already gearing up for legal challenges, citing the 14th Amendment but the plain text of the law only requires a count of “persons,” not necessarily unauthorized residents, and Trump’s team is ready for the legal fight.

The stakes couldn’t be higher. According to Pew Research, states with the largest illegal populations include:

  • California – 1.8 million

  • Texas – 1.6 million

  • Florida – 1.2 million

  • New York – 650,000

  • New Jersey – 475,000

  • Illinois – 400,000

Each of those states receives federal funding and representation based in part on these inflated numbers essentially rewarding lawlessness and open-border policies at the expense of states that enforce immigration laws.

Republicans have long argued that including illegal aliens in the census is a backdoor strategy by Democrats to lock in permanent political power, artificially boosting representation in blue states that openly defy federal immigration law.

Now, under President Trump, that advantage is being ripped away and not a moment too soon.

“This has to stop,” one senior White House official said. “It’s time for the census to reflect the people who are supposed to be here, not those who broke the law to get here.”

This move won’t just restore balance to Congress it could reshape the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential race, especially as redistricting battles heat up in states like Texas.

Trump is once again leading with courage, making the tough calls that D.C. politicians have avoided for decades.
