Trump Campaign Denounces Biden's Planned 'Amnesty' Executive Order

Biden's border plan criticized as amnesty by Trump re-election campaign.

On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign criticized President Joe Biden's anticipated executive order to limit asylum-seeker crossings, labeling it as "amnesty" for illegal immigrants.

Biden’s executive order, set to be unveiled on Tuesday, reportedly includes closing the U.S.-Mexico border when daily encounters of migrants between ports of entry average 2,500, and reopening it when the number drops to 1,500.

  • Amnesty Allegations
Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “Let’s be clear — Joe Biden’s Executive Order is for amnesty, not border security.” She added, “If Joe Biden truly wanted to shut down the border, he could do so with a swipe of the same pen, but he never will because he is controlled by radical left Democrats who seek to destroy America.”

  • Border Crisis Data
U.S. authorities have accounted for approximately 2 million illegal crossings along the southern border each year since 2021. Recent government data shows a daily average of over 3,500 crossings in the past few weeks.

Upon taking office, Biden reversed several of Trump’s immigration policies. Later, he allowed the expiration of the pandemic-era Title 42, which enabled authorities to quickly turn away migrants at the border on public health grounds.

Members of Congress, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and some centrist Democrats, have urged Biden to use his executive authority to curb illegal immigration, halt the influx of fentanyl, and stop human trafficking and the devastation of local communities.

Although Biden had resisted pressure to take executive action, he is now set to sign the order after the Democrat-controlled Senate rejected a bill for the second time that aimed to tighten the asylum process and bolster border security.

  • Political Stakes
Border security and immigration are critical issues as Biden and Trump prepare to face off in the upcoming presidential election. Trump’s campaign website states he would “shut down Biden’s border disaster” in a second term. Leavitt concluded her statement with a call to action, “The border invasion and migrant crime will not stop until Crooked Joe Biden is deported from the White House.”
