Trump Names Brendan Carr as FCC Chairman

Carr promises to hold Big Tech accountable for its censorship practices under the Biden administration.

In a bold move that signals his intent to rein in Big Tech, President-elect Donald Trump has announced his decision to elevate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Brendan Carr to the position of permanent Chairman. The announcement underscores Trump’s continued commitment to tackling censorship and protecting free speech in the digital age.

“Commissioner Carr currently serves as the senior Republican on the FCC,” Trump stated. “Before that, he was the FCC’s General Counsel. I first nominated Commissioner Carr to the FCC in 2017, and he has been confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate three times. His current term runs through 2029 and, because of his great work, I will now be designating him as permanent Chairman.”

Carr, who has been a steadfast advocate for free speech and a vocal critic of Big Tech’s overreach, responded with gratitude. “Thank you, President Trump! I am humbled and honored to serve as Chairman of the FCC,” Carr said in a statement on X. “Now we get to work.”

A Strong Track Record

Carr’s credentials are impeccable. A graduate of the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law, Carr earned his J.D. Magna Cum Laude before clerking on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He later specialized in appellate, litigation, and regulatory matters, which prepared him for the complex legal battles that come with his FCC role.

He served as an advisor to former FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, who praised Carr’s nomination. “He was a brilliant advisor and General Counsel and has been a superb Commissioner,” Pai said.

Targeting Big Tech’s Censorship

Carr’s recent actions against Big Tech reveal his determination to address the erosion of free speech under the Biden-Harris administration. Late last week, Carr launched a direct challenge to four tech giants Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple accusing them of operating a “censorship cartel” that undermines Americans’ First Amendment rights.

“Over the past few years, Americans have lived through an unprecedented surge in censorship,” Carr wrote in a letter to the CEOs of the companies. He cited numerous instances where these corporations collaborated with left-wing organizations, like NewsGuard, to defund and demonetize conservative outlets.

The Role of NewsGuard

NewsGuard, a for-profit company that purports to rank the credibility of news outlets, has faced heavy criticism for its apparent bias. Carr noted that NewsGuard has rated propaganda from the Chinese Communist Party as more credible than some American publications. Even more troubling, one of its advisors signed the infamous letter dismissing the Hunter Biden laptop story as Russian disinformation a move that fueled widespread censorship.

Carr’s demands for transparency include a December 10 deadline for the companies to provide details about their use of NewsGuard and similar tools.

A Trump-Led FCC

With Carr at the helm and Republicans poised to control Congress, Big Tech’s unchecked power faces significant scrutiny. Carr’s appointment is a clear signal that the FCC under Trump’s leadership will prioritize protecting free speech, exposing censorship, and holding tech giants accountable for their actions.

The American people are watching closely as the Trump administration prepares to deliver on its promises.
