Trump State Department Prohibits LGBT Pride and BLM Flags at Embassies

Marco Rubio’s directive restores focus on the unifying symbol of the American flag.

In a move to restore unity and reaffirm American values, the Trump State Department, under the leadership of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has banned the display of LGBT pride flags, Black Lives Matter (BLM) flags, and other non-official banners at U.S. embassies and consulates. Effective immediately, only the U.S. flag, along with approved emblems such as the POW/MIA and Wrongful Detainees flags, may be flown at U.S. diplomatic facilities.

The new directive emphasizes the unifying power of the American flag. According to a copy of the order obtained by the Washington Free Beacon, it states:
“Starting immediately, only the United States of America flag is authorized to be flown or displayed at U.S. facilities, both domestic and abroad... The U.S. flag is a powerful symbol of pride, and it is fitting and respectful that only the U.S. flag be flown or displayed at U.S. facilities, both domestically and abroad.”

This marks a sharp departure from the policies of the Biden administration, which had authorized the flying of pride and BLM flags at embassies. Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken even encouraged embassies to display the pride flag alongside the American flag during Pride Month and key awareness days like the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

Rubio’s directive not only underscores the importance of unity but also holds State Department employees accountable for compliance. Any employee who violates the policy will face disciplinary action, including possible termination or reassignment.

The decision comes after controversial incidents under the previous administration, such as the U.S. embassy in Nassau, Bahamas, raising the pride flag to honor LGBTQ+ rights globally, and the U.S. embassy in Brazil flying the BLM flag during Black History Month in 2022. These displays were criticized as prioritizing divisive political movements over the universal representation of the United States.

This policy shift aligns with broader efforts by the Trump administration to reaffirm national identity and reject political activism on the global stage. By limiting embassy displays to the American flag, the State Department is signaling a return to core values of justice, liberty, and democracy that transcend political and social divisions.

With this decision, the Trump administration is making it clear: America's embassies and consulates are representatives of the nation, not platforms for partisan causes.
