Trump Pledges to Prohibit Transgender Surgeries on Minors Without Parental Consent
Pledges to make it a felony as part of broader effort to protect children.
Former President Donald Trump has pledged to make performing transgender surgeries on minors without parental consent a felony. This promise was highlighted in Trump’s prepared remarks for his Tuesday rally at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department in Howell, Michigan.
The announcement, shared by Trump’s campaign on social media, underscores the former president's commitment to protecting children from what he describes as “sexual mutilation.” Trump’s vow aligns with his broader stance on safeguarding minors from irreversible medical interventions that have become a hot-button issue in the cultural and political landscape.
Key Points:
Trump promised to make it a felony for medical professionals to perform transgender surgeries on minors without parental consent.
This pledge is part of Trump’s broader agenda to protect children from irreversible medical interventions, which he has previously called “child abuse.”
Trump also indicated he would seek the death penalty for those convicted of child rape and trafficking.
“BIG NEWS,” tweeted Karoline Leavitt, the campaign’s national press secretary, reflecting the campaign’s emphasis on this policy. In his prepared remarks, Trump also emphasized his intention to push for the death penalty for child rapists and traffickers, further signaling his focus on protecting vulnerable populations.
The issue of transgender medical interventions for minors, including surgeries and hormone treatments, has been a fiercely debated topic. These procedures, which can involve irreversible surgeries like double mastectomies for girls or vaginoplasty for boys, have sparked national controversy. Many critics argue that these interventions are too extreme for minors, who may not fully grasp the long-term consequences.
The Biden administration, on the other hand, has advocated for the legality of such treatments for minors, even opposing age restrictions in certain court cases. At least 25 states have already passed laws restricting or outright banning transgender surgeries and hormone treatments for minors, creating a stark divide between Republican and Democrat-led states on this issue.
Trump’s latest promise builds on his previous commitments to halt transgender medicalization for minors. Last year, he vowed to direct federal agencies to work against promoting sex and gender transition at any age and emphasized the importance of promoting traditional family values in schools.
The rise of detransitioners—individuals who underwent transgender surgeries and treatments but later regretted their decisions—has further fueled the debate. Many of these individuals argue that their underlying mental health issues were not adequately addressed before being pushed toward irreversible medical procedures.
Additionally, concerns have grown among parents over public schools secretly affirming their children's gender identities without parental consent. More than 19,000 schools across the country reportedly have policies allowing or even encouraging school staff to withhold a student's gender identity from their parents. Polls show that this lack of transparency has divided Americans, with only about 44% of Democrats opposing such counseling without parental knowledge.
Trump’s strong stance on this issue may resonate with many voters who are increasingly concerned about the direction of transgender policies and their impact on children.
