NFL Star Uses National Spotlight to Defend Persecuted Christians
TreVeyon Henderson puts faith before fame, honoring global victims of Christian persecution on Monday Night Football.

In a league where politics, profits, and performative activism often take center stage, one NFL player used his platform for something far more powerful faith in Jesus Christ and solidarity with persecuted Christians.
New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson made waves during the NFL’s annual “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative by dedicating his game-day cleats not to a trendy social campaign or corporate-backed nonprofit, but to Global Christian Relief, a group serving the 380 million Christians worldwide facing real persecution imprisonment, violence, and death for simply following their faith.
“When you read the Bible and you look at what Jesus teaches us and warns us about the persecution we will face for following Him… there’s not much awareness about it,” Henderson said. “It really just opened my eyes.”
For a young athlete in his rookie year, this wasn’t a flashy PR move it was a conviction. Henderson, who found Christ in recent years, worked with his wife to design cleats that told a story:
Blood dripping to symbolize Christ’s sacrifice and the blood of modern martyrs
Silhouettes holding up the Cross to reflect the faith of believers who refuse to bow, even under the threat of death
He wore them on Monday Night Football, one of the biggest stages in American sports.
Brian Orme, CEO of Global Christian Relief, first connected with Henderson during his time at Ohio State, and has watched in awe as the running back used his influence to amplify the mission. Henderson didn’t just post about the group he became a monthly donor, then took his commitment national through his cleats.
“It’s a great example of what it looks like when influence meets conviction,” Orme said. “Him leveraging his platform has a tremendous impact and builds credibility.”
For Christians in Nigeria, North Korea, China, Iran, and parts of India, that impact is life-changing. Global Christian Relief provides safe houses, Bibles, legal aid, and critical support in regions where professing Christ could mean prison or worse. And Henderson is now using his voice to bring attention to those who have none.
His bold stand is part of something larger a cultural shift where unlikely figures are publicly embracing faith. As Orme noted, “God is choosing this moment through President Trump, Nicki Minaj, Bill Maher all these voices pointing toward truth. And TreVeyon is a part of that.”
“I hope it strengthens our faith to be more courageous, to be more bold,” Henderson said. “But also to have compassion… and help however God may call you to help.”
In a time when so many athletes hide behind generic causes and corporate-safe slogans, Henderson chose truth over trend, and faith over fame. The NFL didn’t silence him. He didn’t hide it. He walked it out in cleats.
As the Patriots prepare to face the Bills, Henderson now has more than just fans cheering him on he has a global church praying for him.
