At Least 40 Dead After Tornadoes, Dust Storms Tear Through Midwest and South

Trump activates National Guard as deadly storms leave devastation and power outages across multiple states.

A devastating wave of severe weather tore through the Midwest and South over the weekend, leaving at least 40 people dead and countless communities in ruin. Fierce tornadoes, dust storms, and fires battered states from Missouri to Alabama, triggering widespread destruction and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

The tragic toll includes:

  • 12 dead in Missouri

  • 8 dead in Kansas

  • 6 dead in Mississippi

  • 4 dead in Texas

  • 4 dead in Oklahoma

  • 3 dead in Alabama

  • 3 dead in Arkansas

In Kansas, disaster struck when a wind-fueled dust storm caused a deadly 70-car pileup on Interstate 70, killing eight people. "I've seen it before, but this is probably the worst I've ever seen," Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Tod Hileman commented.

Missouri, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama were particularly hard-hit by tornado outbreaks, with at least 56 tornadoes reported across 10 states, according to the Fox Forecast Center. Entire counties in southeast Missouri Wayne, Ozark, Butler, and Jefferson suffered extensive damage. Videos emerging from Mississippi reveal flattened neighborhoods and wrecked infrastructure.

Tens of thousands remain without power, with the latest figures showing:

  • 56,000 customers out in Pennsylvania

  • 25,000 out in Missouri

  • 23,000 out in New York

President Donald Trump wasted no time responding to the crisis. On Sunday, he activated the National Guard and assured the nation that his administration stands ready to assist state and local officials in recovery efforts. "The National Guard have been deployed to Arkansas, and my Administration is ready to assist State and Local Officials, as they help their communities to try and recover from the damage," Trump posted on Truth Social.
He added, "Please join Melania and me in praying for everyone impacted by these terrible storms."

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey echoed the sentiment, reporting that damage was reported in 52 of Alabama’s 67 counties and thanking first responders and linemen working tirelessly on the ground.

Once again, it’s strong leadership mobilizing resources quickly and decisively that makes the difference when Americans are in need.
