Tom Homan Warns Sanctuary Policies Will Backfire on Democrats
Trump’s incoming border czar says sanctuary cities will lead to more deportations, not fewer.
Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s newly announced border czar, delivered a stark warning to Democrats championing sanctuary city policies: their efforts to shield illegal aliens from deportation will ultimately result in even more deportations. Homan made his case during a weekend appearance on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, outlining how sanctuary policies undermine public safety and escalate enforcement operations.
Homan criticized cities and states that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, highlighting the unintended consequences of their actions. “If you let us in the jail, we can arrest the bad guy in the jail, in the safety and security of the jail,” Homan explained. “But when you release the public safety threat back in the community, you put the community at risk, you put my officers at risk, and you put the alien at risk.”
The Ripple Effect of Sanctuary Policies
Homan emphasized that sanctuary city policies force ICE to conduct enforcement operations within communities, leading to broader sweeps:
Increased Arrests: When ICE targets a specific criminal released from jail, agents inevitably encounter other illegal aliens during the operation. “If they’re in the country illegally, they will be arrested too,” Homan said.
Public Safety Threats: By releasing criminal aliens back into the community, sanctuary cities create unnecessary risks for law-abiding residents and ICE officers tasked with apprehending these individuals.
Policy Backlash: Homan warned that Democrats in cities like San Diego and states like Colorado, which are drafting sanctuary legislation, will face backlash as their policies inadvertently lead to more deportations.
A Clear Message
Homan’s approach is simple: federal immigration enforcement will not turn a blind eye to illegal aliens, even if sanctuary policies attempt to block cooperation. He highlighted how the Biden administration weakened enforcement by limiting ICE officers’ authority, a practice Trump’s administration intends to reverse.
“We’re not going to tell an immigration officer like the Biden administration did that you’re going to turn your back on a known immigration illegal,” Homan said. His message to sanctuary cities was equally firm: “If you want fewer deportations in your community, let us do our job in the jails. If not, we’ll come to your neighborhoods, and we’ll do it there.”
A Return to Law and Order
Under Homan’s leadership, the Trump administration is expected to prioritize robust immigration enforcement, holding sanctuary cities accountable for policies that endanger public safety. Critics of sanctuary policies argue they only serve to embolden illegal immigration and make communities less secure.
With Trump’s second term on the horizon, Homan’s clear stance signals a renewed focus on restoring law and order at the border and beyond. Sanctuary cities may soon discover that their defiance of federal immigration laws comes at a high price.
