U.S. Navy Awards Tom Cruise Civilian Honor for ‘Top Gun’ and Military Contributions

“Top Gun” star recognized for raising awareness of military service and sacrifices.

Actor Tom Cruise has been awarded the U.S. Navy’s highest civilian honor, the Distinguished Public Service Award, for his “outstanding contributions to the Navy and the Marine Corps” through his work in films like Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick. U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro presented the award to Cruise during a ceremony at Longcross Studios near London.

The award, which includes a medal and certificate, is the Navy’s way of recognizing civilians who have significantly advanced public understanding of the military’s mission and sacrifices. Del Toro highlighted Cruise’s ability to shine a light on the dedication of service members, saying the actor had helped increase “public awareness and appreciation for our highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.”

Cruise’s iconic portrayal of naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun (1986) and its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, has immortalized the bravery and skill of Navy pilots. The original film, made for just $15 million, grossed $357 million globally and became a cultural phenomenon.

Top Gun: Maverick soared even higher, earning close to $1.5 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s illustrious career. The Navy credited the sequel with inspiring a new generation of Americans, saying it “brought nostalgia to older audiences and reinvigorated the minds of newer audience members, effectively targeting a younger audience’s interest in the skill sets and opportunities the Navy can provide.”

In addition to Top Gun, Cruise has portrayed military figures in films such as Born on the Fourth of July (1989), where he played paralyzed Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic, and A Few Good Men (1992), in which he starred as a Navy lawyer. Both roles earned critical acclaim and further underscored his commitment to telling stories that honor the sacrifices of America’s military.

Cruise shared his admiration for service members during the award ceremony, saying, “To lead is to serve. And I know that to my core. And I see that in the servicemen and women.”

With a resume that includes the wildly successful Mission: Impossible franchise and whispers of a third Top Gun installment in development, Cruise shows no signs of slowing down. The honor from the Navy adds yet another accolade to a career defined by box office triumphs and a legacy of patriotism on screen.
