Tom Cotton Compares Kamala's Border Promise to O.J. Simpson's Infamous Vow

Cotton compares Harris' campaign rhetoric to a notorious broken promise as border crisis worsens.

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) delivered a scathing critique of Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, comparing her recent pledge to secure the U.S. southern border to O.J. Simpson’s infamous promise to find the killer of his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. Cotton’s sharp rebuke underscores the deep skepticism many Republicans feel toward Harris’ latest campaign promises.

Last week, during a rally in Arizona, Harris claimed that if elected president, she would push for “strong border security” and comprehensive immigration reform. This pledge comes despite her dismal track record on border issues. Early in President Joe Biden’s term, Harris was appointed to lead efforts to address the “root causes” of illegal immigration—a role that has since drawn intense criticism from conservatives. When pressed in June 2021 about why she had yet to visit the southern border, Harris deflected, dismissively remarking, “And I haven’t been to Europe.”

Cotton didn’t hold back in his response to Harris’ renewed promises, writing on X, “Kamala Harris promising to secure the border is like O.J. Simpson promising to find the real killer.” This biting comparison highlights the widespread perception that Harris’ commitment to border security is as empty as Simpson’s promise to find his ex-wife’s murderer.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, border security has become a glaring issue. Reported encounters at the southern border have skyrocketed to approximately 10 million, according to Customs and Border Protection data—a staggering number that has fueled Republican criticism of the administration’s handling of immigration.

Despite the Biden administration’s failures on this front, Harris has waded into the politically charged waters of illegal immigration, an issue that has been a cornerstone of former President Donald Trump’s campaign. In a recent ad, Harris’ campaign portrayed her as a champion of tough border control, claiming she “backed the toughest border control bill in decades” and would, as president, hire thousands more border agents while cracking down on fentanyl and human trafficking.

This messaging marks a stark shift for Harris, who, during her 2020 presidential campaign, argued that entering the U.S. without proper documentation should not be considered a criminal offense. Now, her campaign insists her position aligns with the administration’s, stating, “unauthorized border crossings are illegal.”

However, Harris’ exact plans for securing the border remain elusive. She has yet to grant a significant interview or hold a press conference since becoming the Democratic nominee, and her campaign website lacks a clear policy platform on immigration.

Cotton underscored this point, stating earlier on Tuesday, “Kamala Harris is hiding from the press because every time she speaks, she reminds the American people she is a radical San Francisco liberal.” He added, “We don’t need to speculate what Kamala would do as President—just look at the Biden-Harris record. Inflation, an open border, and chaos around the world.”

As the 2024 election approaches, Harris' attempts to rebrand herself on immigration will likely face intense scrutiny. With Republicans like Cotton ready to pounce on any inconsistency, her promises may prove as hollow as the rhetoric she now seeks to distance herself from.
