Texas Cracks Down on Illegal Abortion Ring Tied to Houston Midwife
Ken Paxton targets underground clinics as part of bold pro-life enforcement campaign.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton isn’t playing games when it comes to defending life. This week, eight individuals connected to a Houston-area midwife were arrested and indicted in what’s being called a sweeping takedown of an illegal abortion ring operating under the radar across multiple cities.
The arrests stem from an ongoing investigation into Maria Margarita Rojas, a 49-year-old midwife who made headlines earlier this year as the first person charged under the Texas Human Life Protection Act. She now faces 15 felony charges, including three counts of performing illegal abortions and 12 counts of practicing medicine without a license.
According to Paxton, the eight additional defendants were working at Rojas' underground clinics in Waller, Cypress, Spring, and Katy, all suburbs of Houston. The accused were identified as:
Yaimara Hernandez Alvarez
Alina Valeron Leon
Dalia Coromoto Yanez
Yhonder Lebrun Acosta
Liunet Grandales Estrada
Gerardo Otero Aguero
Sabiel Bosch Gongora
Jose Manuel Cendan Ley
Paxton didn’t mince words in his statement “This was a cabal of abortion-loving radicals who endangered the very people they pretended to help.”
He went further, calling the alleged illegal operations “evil” and vowing that “dens of fake doctors will not be allowed to operate in Texas.”
This bold enforcement action is a clear signal from Paxton now a U.S. Senate candidate that Texas is dead serious about defending its pro-life laws and punishing those who violate them. And the numbers back up the need for vigilance:
Texas saw a 99% drop in abortions in the year following the Dobbs decision
Over 10,000 babies were estimated to have been saved in the state in 2023 alone
Nationally, illegal abortion pill trafficking has surged by 139% since Roe was overturned
Yet, as always, the abortion lobby is crying foul. The Center for Reproductive Rights, which is representing Rojas in a separate civil case, blasted the charges as part of a “scare campaign.” Their senior counsel, Jenna Hudson, claimed Paxton was targeting “low-income, uninsured immigrants” and accused the state of acting out of political motives.
But this narrative ignores one glaring reality: practicing medicine without a license is a felony, no matter your political agenda. And in Texas, the law is clear abortion is illegal unless the mother’s life is at risk. No amount of identity politics or media outrage will change that.
If these clinics were truly providing "lawful" care, as the abortion lobby claims, why were they hiding it? Why were unlicensed individuals performing procedures behind closed doors?
The truth is, Ken Paxton is doing exactly what Texans elected him to do enforce the law, protect the unborn, and hold bad actors accountable, regardless of their political connections.
As the 2024 election fades into the rearview mirror, one thing remains certain: Texas is setting the bar for pro-life enforcement nationwide. And with leaders like Paxton at the helm, that standard isn’t going anywhere.
