Stowaway Found Dead in American Airlines Plane at Charlotte Airport

Body discovered in landing gear raises serious questions about airport security and illegal travel routes into the United States.

In a grim and deeply troubling discovery, a deceased stowaway was found inside the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane that had just landed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport from Europe.

The body was located by maintenance staff around 9 a.m. Sunday, according to a statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). The aircraft was parked on Hangar Road when the shocking find was made.

CMPD officers pronounced the individual dead at the scene, and the department’s Homicide Unit has launched an investigation. Crime Scene Search teams were dispatched to collect evidence, with assistance from MEDIC and airport operations personnel.

The identity of the individual has not yet been released, and authorities say the case remains active and ongoing.

“CLT Airport is aware of the tragic discovery involving a deceased individual found in an American Airlines aircraft this morning,” said a spokesperson for Charlotte Douglas International Airport. “We are deeply saddened by this news and will support the police department’s investigation as needed.”

American Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement, adding:

“A deceased individual was discovered inside one of the main landing gear compartments of one of our aircraft. We are working with law enforcement on its investigation.”

While tragic, this isn’t the first time a stowaway has attempted to sneak into the United States in such a manner and it raises pressing concerns about both aviation security and border integrity. These types of incidents often go unreported until they end in tragedy.

Here’s what makes this story even more alarming:

  • The flight originated in Europe yet somehow, an unauthorized individual was able to breach an international airport's security perimeter and access the aircraft’s landing gear undetected.

  • The aircraft landed in Charlotte, a major U.S. transportation hub, potentially exposing passengers and crew to serious safety risks.

  • According to the FAA, there have been more than 130 known stowaway attempts worldwide since 1947 most resulting in fatalities due to hypoxia, freezing temperatures, or crushing during landing gear retraction.

It also prompts a serious question. How did this happen in 2025, when we’re supposedly surrounded by layers of "advanced" security?

As our southern border remains wide open under Biden’s failed leadership, it’s no surprise that our national security vulnerabilities are being exposed from the air as well. From the surge in illegal border crossings to now stowaways hidden in aircraft components, America is becoming a soft target across the board.

And while this specific incident may involve a foreign airport’s breach, the responsibility to defend U.S. soil begins the moment an aircraft enters our airspace. That’s a federal failure and one that must be corrected immediately.

As the investigation continues, the American people deserve answers and more importantly, a government willing to prioritize national security over political optics. It’s yet another reminder of what’s at stake in the 2024 election.
